Memorial Day Changes Solid Waste Schedule
In Atlanta Buckhead Midtown Westside and other neighborhoods, Solid Waste Residential Collections will be delayed one day due to the Department closing down all services to celebrate Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2020.

What is the significance of Memorial Day?
First known as Decoration Day, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, designated the observance on May 5, 1868. He called for a nationwide day of remembrance later that month. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed.
As time passed, and other wars occurred, the name was changed to Memorial Day. In 1968, one hundred years later, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act which went into effect in January of 1971. The Monday dates this Act established are:
- Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday: third Monday in January (added 1986)
- Washington's Birthday: third Monday in February
- Memorial Day: last Monday in May (formerly May 30)
- Labor Day: first Monday in September
- Columbus Day: second Monday in October
- Veterans Day: included but changed back to November 11th each year.
