On Being Smart. . .
Actually A Smart @$$
I don't recall the exact date I was called that phrase but do remember the person who said it. Yes, my mother caught me in the act of being a smart-mouthed kid. Although it was a demand to stop being a smart aleck - I knew what she meant.
Don't be a smarty-pants or a wise guy, Mister. Perhaps it was prior to pondering becoming a part of my life but my tendency of having a smart mouth has a long history.
Not at school, mind you. I guess I understood at a young age the importance of location. There is after all a time and a place for such things.
Definitions of the term smart @$$ vary and even spelling doesn't seem to have consistency. Is it one word? Two words? And if two, is it hyphenated or not?
Typically, I have found the spelling isn't important but the intended message when directed at you is pretty clear. Stop. I acknowledge that character flaw in myself and over the years I have learned to control it. Maybe, that's why when I found this quote a bell sounded in my mind.
The quote, in part, is:
Daily,
I visualize the smart-ass troll
who lives deep in my sub-conscious,
and pelt him
with rainbows and unicorns.
Julie Plec
The quote gave me a bit of a smile but also provided pause. Let's face it...when one is a smart @$$, pause may be the right reaction.
