In One Ear. . .

In One Ear

And Out The Other

There is noise.  And disruption.  Lots of stuff that prevents us from hearing.  And seeing.  Sensory experiences of many kinds can confirm initial thoughts as well as confuse.

Some may say it is a situation where overload is the cause.  Is it a question of just enough, too much or something else?

I learned quickly in the NBA

that you keep one eye open at all times

and one ear closed.

You can't react to everything you hear or see.

                                                                  Kelvin Sampson

I didn't immediately recall the name Kelvin Sampson but a quick search told me he is the Houston Rockets basketball coach.

I don't know or can't remember everything I have learned especially in the world of sports.  My knowledge of places may be a bit better but I haven't  visited Houston or even the  state of Texas.

If I needed to seek additional information beyond a rather basic level, I know Kathy Streib can answer many sports questions as well as some bits of Houston history.

Being a know-it-all is not particularly appealing.  That is unless you have been selected as a  Jeopardy! television game show contestant but knowing who to ask can often lead to answers and other happy occurrences.

As long as we continue to improve at every opportunity while maintaining those important connections to the experts, that's a good thing.   Maybe, just maybe, some of that increased knowledge will become a part of our lives.

Sharon Lee - not easy and maybe not completely possible but improvement is my goal.

Kathy Streib - that filtering process is important.

As far as Texas, there are some of the more typical places I'd like to visit but also one somewhat obscure to some(but not all) is Marfa.

Jeff Masich-Scottsdale AZ Associate Broker,MBA,GRI - the wit of Yogi Berra lives on...  Yogi The Bear too.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - success is often based on repitition.

That is my goal in life, to keep improving every day at what I do and what I think. Sometimes I think it's a lofty goal but I still ponder the opportunity.

Hi Michael - interesting points.  We are given great information but about 30 days later we have not retained very much.  That is where spaced repetition comes in.  You have inspired me to write a blog.

I hear and see better when I quiet my mind. And, that's when I can better retain it too.

Hi, Michael, Yes, having the attitude of continuous improvement helps a lot in making things better next time after each task or project completion. there is always something which can be done in a more delightful and improved way.

And in our profession we cannot be the know-it-all, but a resource for our clients to search for the answers.

Good evening Michael Jacobs,

Hard to believe you have never been to Texas!! Kathy Streib is right Texas is huge and it may be flat in some areas but not in the hill country in Austin!! You'll have to come see for yourself.

In today's world there is so much SHOUTING trying to vie for your ear..I've had to tune out the noise and concentrate on what I can change and contribute that is meaningful. We should not pretend to be the "know it all"..we should strive to be the resource that people can trust and that's what I'd rather concentrate on.

Love the message, Michael! I am, and always will be, a big believer in listening to HEAR (and understand), not listening to respond.

The quote reminds me of a conversation that Ray & I had the other night while we were watching the sunset. We both realized how very calm and soothing it is where we live. We moved 18 minutes away from the bustling city (still the same city [Charlotte] but, the noise pollution is nil compared to our last house in the middle of the city. We never realized how loud and distracting the noise was around us...until we had peaceful silence!

Hi Michael:

Today's world is filled with opportunities for visual, and or auditory, distraction if we let them intervene. Awareness is key so we can focus on what is most important, or necessary. It's not always easy to do.

Jeff
