As Far As I Am Concerned. . .

I recently ran across the following quote that I shared a number of years ago on a different platform. There is something that seems “just right” about it.  Then. Right now too.  And right in so many other aspects.

As far as I am concerned, “whom” is a word invented to make everyone sound like a butler.

Attributed to Calvin Trillin

Yes, I know there will be other reasons (many which will be quite valid I am sure) shared that can prove me wrong but I am keeping this quote in mind because I can remember it and it is smile-worthy to me.  And that’s worth a lot in my opinion.

Funny, It definitely sounds so formal. I'm sure I use it from time to time although I'm not a super formal person.

Roy Kelley - Happy Monday to you.

Carla Freund - I understand.  There are times/places where it "makes sense".

I've missed reading your posts.  And I have to agree with the sentiment on the word whom.

Chris Ann Cleland - thank you.  I appreciate those kind words.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS - while I understand and agree about the importance of good grammar(and spelling. . .) there is something rather special about creating, then maintaining a smile-worthy way of life even though I don't consider myself the kinda guy who is always a smiley face type.  🙃

Endre Barath, Jr. - the "techniques" of drivers have always been "watchable" to me.  As for aspects of craziness, it has also been around long before the arrival of the Internet.

You just made me think of when Rick and I were thinking of names for our boat.

Boat would be an understatement...it was actually a yacht. Far more money than anything I would have imagined us ever having. But that is what mortgages are for.

Turns out you don't need all the money...just make the payments and then sell it for close to what you paid for it and all is good!

Back to the topic at hand...

Highfalutin was what we named it. It was perfect because that is what owning a yacht felt like to me...like we were dipping our toes into another class.

Whom seems to fit in that other class. HaHa

Sharon Tara - all this highfalutin talk, yachts and the use of the word whom have me thinking I am traveling in the wrong circles and not just circling in the wrong direction.

It is a poetic word Michael and reminded me of this...

For Whom the Bell Tolls by John Donne

No man is an island,

Entire of itself.

Each is a piece of the continent,

A part of the main.

If a clod be washed away by the sea,

Europe is the less.

As well as if a promontory were.

As well as if a manor of thine own

Or of thine friend's were.

Each man's death diminishes me,

For I am involved in mankind.

Therefore, send not to know

For whom the bell tolls,

It tolls for thee.

Hi Michael! While I know it's good grammar when using 'whom' properly but gosh, it sure does sound so formal. Your quote did bring a smile to my face and reading outloud to Ray, it did for him too. So, smile-worthy indeed!

Hi Michael:

"Whom" is one of THOSE words that causes just a bit of confusion. Seems to me Lily Tomlin's famous Ernestine character (switchboard operator) knew how to use it correctly. "It this the party to whom I am speaking?"
