Real estate when lots of family members, some not so cranked to sell.

This blog post about petition to partition, a legal process to force a real estate sale when lots of people own it but not all wish to let go of property jointly held.

Petition to partition using the Maine court system, a judge wearing a robe.

Splitting up family property when lots of heirs end up owning a property collectively. Think of an estate where a large family grew up on a Maine farm with plenty of land. And what to do with all this land in Maine becomes a bone of contention. Not everyone is moving in the same direction on listing to sell the Maine farm land.

All rise. ..(Standing). Read more about "petition to partition", a legal process to force joint owners to list, sell and divide the financial proceeds.

When all efforts to divide the property to carve out a piece for those not wanting to sell to retain a portion.

You can't take it with you. When many names are on the deed to the property listing. Petition to partition when all else fails to work out a solution on what to do with a Maine real estate property with lots of owners and not all wish to sell.

Hi Andrew- I can remember a home I consulted on years ago. Two of the siblings wanted to sell their parent's home, but one brother (who was out of work). did not. He wanted to live there. Not sure what happened. b

The longer the list of property owners on the deeds, the harder it is for agreement on what to do with heirship property especially. Often one of the family members thinks their kid should get a deal and "conversations from the grave" happen. My dearly departed Dad wanted my son to have the property for a song or nothing at all. Thanks Kathy Streib .

It's a shame when someone wants to hold onto property and they can't come to an agreement with co-owners.

Wow, that sounds like a real mess.  So many families are torn apart over material assets or money, it is sad.
