Pew, Now What Do I Do?

With the total re-model of our church we decided we needed new seating. Our new sanctuary is slightly smaller then the old one and the old pews didn't fit (so says the Fire Marshal) plus the old beat-up pews didn't look good with everything else being new.

I did some measuring and found I could use one of them on our deck. I will treat it with some form of waterproofing so it doesn't deteriorate. If it doesn't hold up there is always...

Remodeling is always an adventure. Be it a full remodel or just a room in your home, the one thing you can count on is a surprise or two. One surprise you don't want is to find out that your remodel violates a City, County, or State code.

We had hoped to reuse the pews in our church BUT because our new worship area is 10" narrower our isles to the left, right, and center do not meet current code. Remember that codes change and it's always a good idea to see if your remodel will meet the current code.

Not a bad idea Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089 it could hold a lot of weight/stuff if I mount it properly. 😃

I have a large family.  When they come to visit, a pew like that one would be handy on the patio.

Good point about remodeling and code changes. And I am sure you will find a perfect place for a church pew! Outdoor seating is a great idea.

Good morning, Bob... codes, permits... amazing how often I come across homeowners who pay no attention to these and then complain when the required fix is more expensive than if they'd done the right thing upfront.

It would make an amazing shelf Laura Cerrano and I do have the perfect place for it in my garage.

That is the plan Myrl Jeffcoat but if it doesn't work out Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089 and Laura Cerrano have a good plan B.

EXCELLENT play on words Endre Barath, Jr. ! We had a massive change in code after our flood in 2011. A few years later they realized they had gone a little to far and rolled a few back but all in all the new codes really were called for.

I have seen some pretty artistic uses of old pews Grant Schneider . If nothing else comes to mind they are made of good hardwood and do burn well.

When it comes to remodels and codes it's always best to check with the City first Dorie Dillard Austin TX . As far as the pew I think it will work well as it is but I can see quite a few possibilities for it.

I think the biggest challenge will be to make sure water can drain off of it Kat Palmiotti . Their design makes it a little difficult but I'm sure a few well placed holes will take care of it.

Exactly Nina Hollander, Broker . The inspectors also have the option of making the DIYer completely tare down an "improvement" and start over.

I guess it would work on the deck outside but I was thinking that you might create a chapel inside of your home, haha.

Those old pews could become park benches with a new paint job.

That is a great thought that had not occurred to me Roy Kelley . I am sure I would need to get permission from the City for that but I can see how well that would work on some of their woodland trails.
