Volunteering - The Life Blood of Organizations

This post is inspired by Bob "RealMan" Timm's post Morning Exercises!

Bob's post is about starting your day with what I like to call, "An Attitude of Gratitude."  The post continues to the topic of volunteering at a Christian Radio Show and how he enjoys it.

As we commented back and forth, I was reminded how many years volunteering has been a part of my life, and what it's given me in return.   As we know in Active Rain, inspiration comes from many sources.  A thought, a memory or a  new idea. In this case, memories!

Volunteers are truly the life blood of many organizations, just as Bob has written.  How many times have you been asked to volunteer?  And how many times have you volunteered without being asked?

I have never thought about the topic collectively.  But from high school to now, it's been a GREAT run volunteering for a variety of organizations.   From churches, sports organizations, and non-profits,  putting forth that effort has been beyond rewarding.

So think on this topic - What volunteer type activities have you accomplished? What has been your greatest reward?   Currently, my volunteer efforts in real estate benefit Arizona homeowners!

Hello Jan - it's been amazing to see and experience a countless number of such posts over the years.  That unique power of sharing is a value-added benefit of ActiveRain membership.   And it happens on so many different levels.

I find I volunteer more as I get older. Right now I volunteer regularly at Habitat for Humanity, and as an active member of the Flathead Valley Exchange Club - in additional to our regular meetings and fund raising we volunteer for different non-profits each month. It's all enjoyable!

Good morning, Jan... every little bit one can do helps. People sometimes don't do because they think it won't have enough impact to bother. How wrong they are. Having lived overseas, I can tell you that no country is more generous when it comes to volunteering that the USA.

Jan, volunteering does feel really good.  Have painted houses for Habitat many times, cleaned front yards of eldering homeowners for our Board, and worked at the soup kitchen.

Hi Jan,

Your post is so important. You are so correct.  It is the lifeblood of organizations.

There are so many opportunities to volunteer, especially in our smaller community of Sedona.  I still volunteer with the Salvation Army, but before that, it was with the Senior Center, Meals on Wheels, as well as a Housing Council and the Sedona Humane Society.

The key is ensuring it is a cause you enjoy and feel good about.  I am off to Bob "RealMan" Timm's post, Morning Exercises.

Hi Jan volunteers are the life blood of many communities across America!  I see a cool segment on the local news about volunteers in Mesa and was impressed they were so organized - and it's been going on for years.  Personally I've been volunteering basically my whole life as it was highly encouraged by my parents (who were big givers in the community).

I agree Kat Palmiotti .  I saw in today's news that we are less stressed as we age so it only seems natural that we'd also feel we want to give back as we get older.  Good for you!-

Much of my volunteer work has been with a regional builders association. And, the builders have provided funds for many other causes that I have promoted.

My rewards were the friendships I developed. My recognition was becoming president of the association and a member of the state and national boards of directors. Then, I served on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Home Builders.
