Religion and Real Estate (sounds pretty dull)

Uh, oh.  My first blog and I am already in hot water.  Well, I did grow up in the South where Religion and everything else is fair conversational fodder.  Even when buying a house.  Clients do sometimes indicate that they might want to pray over a decision to purchase even the best deals that seem to jump off the page of being best price square footage in the best Subdivisions.  Then why pray over it, you and I might ask?  Go figure.  Sometimes I have been asked as their Realtor to join em in praying that God would move a few resources here and there to open some ugly doors for a new beginning. There are some folks who are challenged enough in their thinking that they believe that a higher power might be involved in everyday matters of real estate.  Usually these are the type of folk who check out the schools, neighborhood, crime statistics, commute to work, and the drive to church or synagogue.  Have you ever had Clients like this?  They don't make decisions based just on the surface economics of the house being a good deal.  They try to look at the big picture.

Recently I had some clients who bought a home in an area of town that everything looked worthless and crime ridden.  The schools were a joke.  But they prayed about it and bought in so that they could be some sort of resource to the area.  I am trying to imagine what kind of Real Estate course could cover the topic of selling to folks who go looking for trouble so that they can 'bless' a subdivision.  So I guess the subject of Religion and Real Estate is a little bigger than the semantics of telling every salesman to 'be afraid of 'Religious Talk.' I'm not bothered or worried when a Realtor throws down the gauntlet and wants to stay out of such talk.  It can get messy, especially if your Clients want to pray with you or for you, and you aren't much inclined to get  mixed up with any prayer ideas directed toward  your daily job of being a Realtor.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.  phil 4:13

That is interesting -- buying a a not so good area, so the buyer can help the area. Different strokes for different folks.

RC - Welcome to ActiveRain!  I know that you will bring some great writing here to AR.  As you already know, the subject of faith doesn't scare me in the least, but I am respectful if people don't want to talk about it.  I will be the first official subscriber to your blog tonight.

Thank you both for stopping by.  It is pretty odd for a Buyer to approach a home with the idea that he/she should bring a large portion of the value. Realtors and their buyers are usually taught to be cautious and skeptical in every circumstance, and not let the emotions dictate a sale. Obviously there are plenty of hidden land mines in our industry that cause plenty of Realtors to lose sleep every night.  Our language skills can open and shut doors in the space of a few minutes.  We can trounce a persons way of life by a simple comment like, 'I don't discuss Religion.'   Or put it on the other foot, and say something like, 'I need my Realtor to pray and fast before every showing.'  There are tons of folks who live in my city of Austin, Texas who want assurance that the property contains plenty of 'Positive Energy' within the walls. :)

How can any property sell?  I often wonder about the process when a Buyer spends less than thirty minutes looking at each home, and at the end of the day, picks one.   And then the whole family gets blessed or cursed or smacked with positive energy depending on the price per square foot and the interest rate.  :)  RC
