Thanks to modern electronic miracles, I took an hour and half off from my vacation to write an offer for my favorite newlyweds.
Yes, I smuggled my Macbook Air into the beach cottage so I could do a little blogging, But it does have Zipformonline for Mac.
I was able to email the offer it to both the husband in DC, the wife about to board McCain’s campaign plane somewhere in North America, and, along with the disclosures (sent by the listing agent also on vacation somewhere up here), to the admin folks at my office. The wife managed to get an email back to me. The husband signed an initialed everything at my office via a conference call, then Bert (my office’s administrative hero) did a scan fax so I could forward everything to the other agent.
I did it during the really hot sun part of the day when I usually stay off the beach anyway. So I didn’t even lose more than an afternoon nap.
Which sort of raises an issue about bringing all the stuff you need to stay connected to your business on your vacation.
Yes, I have my Blackberry and my laptop with me, and I don’t really worry about losing business while I’m up here. But can I really relax as long as I am able to write an offer? Or could I really relax if I did not have that capability?
I remember back in the early 1980’s when I first started out. There was no way to take time off without the strong possibility of losing a sale. Now, that was not conducive to relaxation, even if I had a colleague covering my business. When you left town, you left town. You could call your answering machine for messages from a phone booth but it wasn’t all that easy.
And thinking back, I didn’t take nearly as many days away from town in those days. So I’m thankful for the laptop and the Blackberry and the little gizmo that links me to the Internet up here.
And, I can blog from the beach! Speaking of the beach – it’s calling to me right now!
