Vacation Diary: Day 10 Of Type-A At The Beach

By
Real Estate Agent with RLAH@properties AB95346

Thanks to modern electronic miracles, I took an hour and half off from my vacation to write an offer for my favorite newlyweds.

Yes, I smuggled my Macbook Air into the beach cottage so I could do a little blogging, But it does have Zipformonline for Mac.

I was able to email the offer it to both the husband in DC, the wife about to board McCain’s campaign plane somewhere in North America, and, along with the disclosures (sent by the listing agent also on vacation somewhere up here), to the admin folks at my office. The wife managed to get an email back to me. The husband signed an initialed everything at my office via a conference call, then Bert (my office’s administrative hero) did a scan fax so I could forward everything to the other agent.

I did it during the really hot sun part of the day when I usually stay off the beach anyway. So I didn’t even lose more than an afternoon nap.

Which sort of raises an issue about bringing all the stuff you need to stay connected to your business on your vacation.

Yes, I have my Blackberry and my laptop with me, and I don’t really worry about losing business while I’m up here. But can I really relax as long as I am able to write an offer? Or could I really relax if I did not have that capability?

I remember back in the early 1980’s when I first started out. There was no way to take time off without the strong possibility of losing a sale. Now, that was not conducive to relaxation, even if I had a colleague covering my business. When you left town, you left town. You could call your answering machine for messages from a phone booth but it wasn’t all that easy.

And thinking back, I didn’t take nearly as many days away from town in those days. So I’m thankful for the laptop and the Blackberry and the little gizmo that links me to the Internet up here.

And, I can blog from the beach! Speaking of the beach – it’s calling to me right now!

Hi Pat... OK, I am jealous... I need a beach vacation!  I was up in New Hampshire a few weekends ago to visit family and we took a scenic drive along the beautiful NH seacoast (all 12 miles of it).  Having spent my childhood summers vacationing at the Jersey Shore I guess the ocean just gets in your blood because I have been thinking about how ocean isolated Dallas is ever since I got back.

Enjoy your well earned vacation!

Great picture.  I also just got back last week from a weeks long vacation at my favorite beach-OCMD.  I also had my lap top and blackberry with me and a great team member/partner covering for me on the stuff needed from the office.  I also sold a house while I was at the beach.  It has to be the only ob in the world that you can make money in PA while sitting on the beach in Maryland.

Pat, I love ZipFormsOnline for its email capability too. That ocean water does look inviting.

Pat - When I travel ANYWHERE overnight, my laptop is with me! And I have online access to all our state forms for contracts, so I am never away from my business. As a realtor, I think it is expected of us!

When Bill travels to Europe with his wife I cover over here - If I am gone for a couple of weeks, he covers, but I still have my laptop in case I need to handle anything!!!!!

Pat, I came back down to NC and I love being able to deal with deals while we are away.  Even if I am away and know I have something that needs to be done I can't relax until I know it is done.  what's the point of going away?  Good for you and good luck on your offer.

It's the joy of being a solo agent!  I suppose if you had a team of admins, buyers agents, listing specialists and marketing gurus you could go away without anything electronic and just forget the entire world of real estate.  It sounds like you have a pretty good support team within your office anyway.

It's good to have the laptop, if for no other reason to stay in touch with AR.

I have discovered that I now  go crazy if I'm not connected to the world or at least my office.  I've got to get a grip.  I actually missed my beach trip this year and I have felt the same all summer because of it.  I'm thinking I'll be taking an early fall trip just to get my fix.

10 Days at the Beach??? I wouldn't have a clue what to do! Last year I went to Europe in July and lost a ton of busiiness. I hope that you can "share w/your other agents' and still make it happen.

Pat - That's awesome. I am going to the caribbean and not sure about cell phones there. I called Verizon today to find out that I can program my phone - but the uncertainty of strong and weak signals remain a question. I plan to stay connected by email and my broker will be in charge of all my files.
