Halloween

With summer now a passing thought and fall right around the corner, it is time to think about upcoming holidays (not Columbus Day).  You guessed it folks, Halloween!

Last year, much to the chagrin of my grown daughter, I decided to pass out my business cards with the candy.  I placed a piece of candy (or several pieces, depending upon how soon I wanted to "run" out) in each trick or treaters bag along with one of my business cards.  I thought this would be a great way to market myself to not only my farm area (I use my neighborhood as my farm area) but to those people who transport their children from surrounding neighborhoods who probably think our candy is better than in their neighborhood.  What a great marketing tool I thought and it's a free way to advertise.

The result you ask?  Nothing, nada, ziltch, zero.  Not one phone call.  But that's okay; I am sure my business card is somewhere in their junk drawer in the kitchen -- ready to be pulled out at a moment's notice.  Keep hope alive!

You think? I think it's possible that many parents never saw the contents of the kid's bags.

I'm thinking of going the McDonald gift certificate routh this year.

I have thought about doing this. Maybe a business card magnet would be better?

I like all of the ideas above.  Never thought of passing out my card then but thats a natural. I doubt it would help right then but again it gets your name out to the neighborhood!

I read somewhere here on Rain last year that someone took a card andglued  it to the inside cover of a book. I believe that they went to the dollar store and bought some very inexpensive books. This really is not for me but I wanted to put it out there .I have a wide variety of ages to pass out to on Halloween so this would be too difficult for me.

I was thinking about making cookies this year and tying the business card with the ribbon. The thought being that they bag of cookies will likely end up on kitchen table or counter and not thrown away instantly. ~Rita

Much to the embarassement of my kids, I used to hand out Halloween pencils.  I did get a couple listings out of it, but to this day my kids still remind me that no kid wants a pencil for Halloween!

Print something on the back that offers the holder a discount for a local service that you have arranged with a vendor -- make sure you put an expiration date on the card -- you want to get your card noticed and held on to

Hi Scott

That's a fantastic idea.  I will try that and see what happens.

Beverly,

My first year in real estate, I dressed up as Flavor Flav and passed out candy to the kids. At the same time , I gave my business card to the parents. I had the same result.  I think the problem is that you are not giving away anything of value. If I were going to do it again, I probably would pass out a small brochure with valuable informtion (ie..emergency phone numbers, business in the area, helpful tipS).   Maybe even a laminated card with the pizza, chinese, movie rental phone numbers. If you were able to work out some type of coupon with one of these places, that might be something of value that you could give away.

Good luck this year.

Nice idea!  What about stickers with you name and photo of some kind?  Little kids especially seem to like stickers.

The Realtor I work for has a mold to make a business sized chocolate bar with kind of an imprint of her business card - it goes in a plastic case and she puts her actual business card on it.  I can't believe we never thought to give those out for Halloween!  Thanks!
