Monarch on jatropha

A monarch on the jatropha bush, stoking up before the big migration to Mexico.

Swallowtail on flame acanthus

A giant swallowtail feeding on the flame acanthus. It may have been one of the caterpillars on the lemon tree.

Bordered patch butterfly

A bordered patch, "one of the most variable butterfly species in the world," according to my butterfly book.

"Leaf" butterfly on acanthus

I only got two shots of this beautiful white-angled sulphur before it fluttered away.

I'm so glad you guys enjoyed the photos! I am getting quite a collection together as we learn what kinds of plants butterflies like.

I love butterflies but that usually means that I have to put a few extra plants in my gardens because those darn ol' caterpillars have to eat something before they can become butterflies. LOL

It's true, Russel! The gulf frittilaries ate up our passion flower before it had a chance to bloom, and the tiger swallowtails love dill. We've already planted next spring's food plant for them.

Robin

These are really good shots.  Are you using any special macro lens and settings?

Thanks, Michelle--I am going to try zinnias. You and Crystal have both mentioned them.

Trey, I am just getting in close with a FinePix digital camera. I have never worked out how to use a SLR camera or taken a photography course, I'm ashamed to say! Sometimes I have to take several shots to get one good one, but it's worth it.

Thanks, Deborah and Brenda! The sulphur is my new favorite, and still the only one I've seen. I don't know about having a green thumb, but I'm happy with my garden and its visitors!

Thanks, Dale! I hope you had a happy one, too!

Hi, Trey: the other day there were a lot of small yellow butterflies on the lantana. Today they're hiding from the rain! Yay, rain!
