Ice Storm Red Hook NY

Northeast Ice Storm wasn't a pleasant experience

On Thursday December 11th there was rain, wind and ice and finally the electricity went out.  It was hard trying to sleep that night because it was cold and you could hear the wind as well as the branches breaking.  We had hoped that by Friday the heat would be back on but this did not happen because of the damage done.  According to news reports there were over 500,000 consumers without electricity in the Northeast.  Thankfully the lights came back on tonight, it is sure nice to have water once again.

There were a few lessons learned.

  • I won't complain about the monthly cost of my cell phone service, the cell was the only phone that worked.
  • I was glad I did not throw away all phone books because I could not find information on-line.  I had no internet access.
  • Always store up some water when you hear a storm is coming.

I am just happy I can get back to my normal routine.

Jennifer,

Oh my, I heard about this on the news earlier this a.m. I can't imagine what that's like, you must be one hearty-soul. I was in N.Y. City one week ago and the cold really got to me. I thought there is no way I could do that. Hope things get better for you!!!

Hi, Jennifer: Glad to hear you've got your power back! I'm located not that far south of you, and all we had was rain, rain and more rain. (And lots of flooding.) Hopefully, this will be the last ice storm of the season. I'll take a heavy snow fall over ice any day!

Ginger we had not used the fireplace in a few years.  Because of allergies we have a gas one, however we did not turn it on until the second night, just concern about blowing ourselves up.  It got so cold we decided to go ahead anyway....lol.....(couldn't find the instructions)

Thank you for your concern.

Lynda - Now that I have heat I feel much better however some people won't have heat back for a couple weeks because of the damage and that is not going to be pleasant.

Jennifer - I agree, ice scares me.  I once lost control of my car because of black ice, I had lots of company then, everyone was in the ditch or cars all  heading in the wrong direction, it was so unexpected.

Thanks for your concern

Jennifer, I heard the reports for the storm upstate but did not hear about all the power outtages.  I'm glad you have power again--I know what it's like :(  We were much luckier, just rain thankfully.

This storm was a weird one here in Mass. In one town it was a complete mess with ice everywhere and the next town away nothing...very strange!

Hi Jennifer... I have had a few storms where I was without power for over a day.  It's no fun, but as your picture shows, these awful storms often create some beautiful scenery!  Glad things are back to normal for you!

Jennifer ice storms are beautiful, the trees look like they are made of crystal, but they are also so very very dangerous.

Carole- I am glad the power is back, I think in some area the rain led to flooding for some.  Thanks for your concern.

Bill - That's what I have heard, even the way the electricity was restored was weird.

Steve - Yes the ice on the trees does look beautiful unless one of those limbs hit your roof.

Pat - That is for sure, even beauty can be seen in something destructive.

George - And when the wind blows those dangerous crystals chimes.

Jennifer, glad that you have your electric back so quickly. Back a few years ago when we had that storm in Baltimore, we were with out power for an entire week. It can really be hard. Thanks for sharing!

The worst may have been withdrawal from the Active Rain addiction? Just joking. I know how this can be -- when I lived in the Midwest and power lines were above ground, it happened a lot. In most areas of the west, power lines are buried and in newer home areas the lines even come into the homes under ground. The only reason the power goes out is when lightening strikes a transformer, or a contractor fails to "blue-stake" before digging.

Tanya - This happened to me in 1987 and the electricity was out for over a week.  Since we had just moved I did not get a chance to unpacked.

Ann I didn't really miss AR that much, I usually use the time for reflection and my family always hear a new story about my childhood they had never heard before.  What I really missed was Google.

Debra - I thought those branches made a good shot, glad you liked it..  Here is hoping your snow storm will be light.  We will probably get it later tonight.

Yikes Jennifer!  I didn't realize it hit so close to home.  The whole time we were hearing about the storm, we had tons of rain and I was so thankful that the weather stayed warm enough that it didn't turn to ice.

Thank goodness you and yours are safe and sound in spite of what you had to go through!

Here's hoping that was the worse storm of the year for you!

Jennifer~  Glad you survived that awful ice storm.  New Hampshire got hit hard and the governor declared a state of emergency.  There are still some parts of the state that will not have any power until after Christmas.  Hope the rest of the winter is not as challenging.

Jennifer...

I'm sorry to hear about all of that. I know how you feel. When Hurricane Charlie hit us head on we lost power for two weeks. After the first week without power or running water we finally broke down and bought a generator. The lessons I learned from that Hurricane is to be prepared. I always have a case of bottled water, non perishable food, batteries, flashlights, gas and extension cords in good working order. Preparing for storm season here in Florida is a huge. I'm pretty sure Home Depot makes a bulk of their profits during Hurricane Season :)

TLW...ROAR!

TLW - When I heard about the snow storm for today I immediately made sure I had enough water.  It is really important to be prepared.  I felt really bad for our friends in NH who were still without power.  Thanks for your concern.

Jennifer,

We had some of that ice ourselves this last week. Those trees look just like my trees the other day. 50 degrees out right now though and the snow is all but gone.
