My husband, the roaster

The Columbian recently posted an article about a local entreprenuer that has opened up his own coffee roasting shop. The roastingCup of coffee Vancouver Washington company's name is N'orwest Coffee and his name is Mike McGinness, and he also owns Paradise Cafe at 1304 Main St. I haven't been there yet, but it's now on my list. The reason I'm bringing this up is because I sent the article to my husband, hoping to inspire him.

You see, my husband roasts coffee. It's gotten really good lately. Earlier I made a post about some incredible Ethiopian coffee at The Rivermaiden. Well, about a week later, my husband happened to roast some Ethiopian coffee beans. It was good, but it wasn't the same as the Rivermaiden's. Anyways, he is getting really good at roasting his beans. Now, Mike, in the Columbian story, spent $12,000 getting his roaster. And the Rivermaiden spent about $10,000 on their Clover machine. My husband spent maybe a dollar on the old hand-cranked popcorn popper that he roasts our coffee in and he got it at Goodwill. Steves Coffee Roasting EquipmentI've had our old Black & Decker coffee pot so long, I don't know what I paid for it. So, my husband, braving the fierce weather of Vancouver, Washington (don't laugh - it's been rough this week!), roasts coffe for me and I can have it so fresh! Can I tell the difference between the Ethiopian Yada Yada at Rivermaiden and the Ethiopian SumthinElse at home? Yes. But I'm feeling like I'm getting a pretty good deal on my $22,000 coffee at home!

My husband LOVES good coffee and can tell the difference between beans . . . but we haven't roasted our own.  I'll be emailing him you blog -- am sure he will want to do it!

My palate is way coarse! I can tell if something is smooth or acidic, but I'm doubtful I could even describe which continent a particular bean came from, let alone any further refinement, LOL. But I do like coffee! Yesterday my husband roasted Tasmanian Peaberry. I'm expecting something smooth, maybe a little fruity (I have no idea why!). Today we finished the Nicaraguan something - it was a very nice coffee - smooth, a little assertive up front. I hope your husband ventures into the roasting. It's so satisfying to say "I did that!"
