A Fall Color Tour of the World's Oldest Mountains in Murphy, North Carolina - 10/27/09 01:13 PM

I spent last weekend enjoying one of the biggest reasons to move to the mountains of Murphy, North Carolina. During an overnight trip to Asheville- another great destination that's only 2 hours from Murphy  I was treated to an incredible display.

The oldest mountains in the world covered in vivid shades of crimson and gold sprawled around me in every direction.

We took the scenic route through the Nantahala National Forest, a two lane road that follows the Nantahala River, where scenes like this await around every curve in the road.  The white water rafters weren't out, but there were plenty of … (2 comments)

Has the Housing Market Hit Bottom in Murphy, North Carolina? - 10/21/09 03:03 PM
On Tuesday morning, Oct. 21, Barbara Corcoran spoke with Matt Lauer on the Today Show about the latest statistics in the housing market nationwide.  By examining several variables, she concluded that the answer is "NO" for the country as a whole. I decided to apply her checklist to the housing market in Murphy, North Carolina to see how we fare based the same criteria.
Unemployment rate is nearing 10% - Our rate in Cherokee County has been above 10% for over a year now, and has actually come down recently. There's a large inventory of unsold homes - Our inventory is large, but the total nmber of homes on the … (3 comments)

Have you ever dreamed of living in a log cabin in the mountains?  Like so many Florida snowbirds who are drawn back to the comfort of a place with four distinct seasons, I came to the mountains of Murphy, North Carolina with the image of a cozy log cabin, complete with stone fireplace and a covered porch where Pa and I could sit in Cracker Barrel rocking chairs and drink lemonade.

I have my log cabin but I seldom sit on the front porch.  Instead I'm sitting in the conference room, at a rustic log table with a … (5 comments)

Planting A Fall Container Garden in the Mountains - Murphy, North Carolina - 10/12/09 03:50 PM

I've gardened in 3 very different climates over the years, from Northern Michigan where we got 20 FEET of snow in the winter to subtropical Key Largo, Florida, where chunks of limestone took the place of garden soil.  Here in the mountains of Western North Carolina, I've found a mild year-round climate that allows an endless variety of plants to flourish.
Over the weekend, I decided to try a new combination in one of the decorative pots on my deck.  I wanted something that would give me a splash of color even as frost approaches, stay green all winter, and look good … (1 comments)

There Are Angels Among Us at Activerain - 10/11/09 07:37 PM
Last week I had the emotional roller coaster ride of my life and this Activerain community provided the high point.
Monday morning I was notified that my bank refused to rewrite documents for a commercial loan that mistakenly included my home as part of the collateral.  If I didn't sell enough lots over the next 12 months in the subdivision I'm developing, I could lose not only my entire investment, but my house as well.  The bank wanted the paperwork signed within 24 hours, after months of no response to offers we'd made of alternative collateral.
My own attorney also represents the title company that made the mistake, so … (53 comments)
