interior decorating: Pleasant Dreams Or A Nightmare In The Making? - 06/10/09 11:41 AM

A beautifully dressed bed is the focal point of your bedroom. The colors, patterns and styles are unending. There is something to please everyone.
If your current bedding is hitting the 7-year-old mark, you're most likely due for some new bedding. Worn, faded, ripped bedding is not very inviting to slip into at the end of the day.

interior decorating: Wallpaper Or Art ~ It Can Be Both - 05/18/09 03:39 AM
There are some beautiful wallpapers out there and while I love them, I just can't bring myself to wallpaper an entire room. However, I can still enjoy the lovely patterns that are out there by using the wallpaper in other ways. Photos courtesy of All Posters and Real SimpleFraming pieces of wallpaper and using them in lieu of actual pictures. Not only am I getting some of that beauty I'm admiring, but an inexpensive way to add some art to my walls! You can do individual pieces or hang three together in a tryptich. interior decorating: White Is A Color - 03/27/09 09:55 AM
White ~ it can conjure up cool, clean, fresh, and sterile visuals.  White is usually thought of as a cool or cold color.  Sometimes it's thought of as no color.  Hard to figure then why paint manufacturers like Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams have about a hundred colors between them in the white family.  Just like any other color, white can have other colors within it - blue, yellow, pink, gray, etc.
Many retailers are showing white with other colors, which can sometimes tame a wild color, tone down a bright color and look clean and fresh with natural colors.  Using Pottery … (20 comments)

interior decorating: Dinner With My Friend ~ C Tann-Starr! - 02/22/09 07:54 AM
Saturday evening I met my AR friend, Carolyn, at a restaurant midway between the two of us for dinner.  We had a great time at Hemingways on Wantagh Avenue in Wantagh.  The service and food were fantastic, and the atmosphere was conducive to some great conversation.
Not only was this a chance for us to have dinner together, but Carolyn brought one of her clients along who is in the process of buying a house, and is eager to decorate it - putting her own stamp on her new home.  It was a good opportunity to meet a prospective client in … (22 comments)

interior decorating: Some Long Island History ~ Did You Know . . . - 02/19/09 02:37 AM
That when P.T. Barnum died in 1891 his estate was valued at $4.3 million dollars.  Mr. Barnum made his fortune not just from his circus, but from real estate; some of which he purchased in Port Jefferson on Long Island.

In 1873 P.T. Barnum bought land in Port Jefferson and, using his nephew and a real estate partner as his agents, cleaned up the site by removing dense areas of trees in the area known as Brick Hill.  He planned to "erect a good number of houses there".
While the first parcels were advertised in August of 1875, none were … (4 comments)

interior decorating: It's Time To Come Home ~ Lighting - 02/12/09 12:12 AM
Lighting can make or break a room, but many people don't give it a second thought.  That paint color you labored over choosing can wind up looking like the worst choice you've ever made based on the lighting you use in that room. Let's take a look at the three basic types of lighting.
Task lighting is lighting that performs a function for a task.  Task lighting should be in every room in your house.  From desk lamps to table lamps, before purchasing a lamp, keep in mind what tasks you will be using it for.  Reading lamps should be above eye … (19 comments)

interior decorating: February Special ~ Window Treatments - 02/01/09 12:07 AM
Custom window treatments not only help keep out the drafts in the winter but can help block the hot rays of the sun in summer.  With custom window treatments you can get the fabric and design of your choice.  An added benefit is that you can get a black-out lining on custom window treatments.  This works well for those that work the night shift or for your home theatre experience.
Custom window treatments afford you the opportunity to choose a fabric that will work in your home, whether solid or patterned, as well as various trims that … (4 comments)

interior decorating: It's Time To Come Home ~ Color - 01/18/09 11:45 AM

Now that we've discussed the applications available for your walls, let's look at colors - not only for use in those applications, but also in the other accessories you may bring into a room.  It is not unusual to ask a client what colors they feel good wearing, because you can translate those same colors used in clothing lines into the home.  Color is an emotional choice and chances are if you are happy wearing certain colors, or think you look good in certain colors, you will surround yourself with those colors in your home.  Also look to accessories like … (13 comments)

interior decorating: It's Time To Come Home ~ Walls - 01/16/09 02:10 AM
Walls - they are what enclose your home from the outside world and separate rooms within your home.  The dictionary defines walls as "a vertical structure forming an inside partition or an outside surface of a building."  For the purposes of this article, we will be discussing the interior walls of your home.
This part of the series will be broken down into Paint, Wallpaper, Faux Techniques and Other Options.  I hope you will visit some of the websites listed to get more of an in-depth idea of these different treatments.

interior decorating: It's Time To Come Home ~ Series Introduction - 01/15/09 05:22 AM

Whenever something happens in the world that affects us, the one place we can truly feel relaxed and comfortable is in our homes.  As 1930's former film star and interior decorator William Haines said, "The only real freedom we have is our home.  Only there can we express anything we want."
This year I plan on writing a series that will assist you in making your home the welcoming sanctuary you can retreat to at the end of the day.   The basic foundation of the series is the message that "It's Time To Come … (13 comments)

interior decorating: Karaoke At Houston Airport - 12/21/08 12:30 AM
I read this news story this morning, and think it is a great, out-of-the-box and creative idea!  Passengers (and employees) at Houston Airport were able to listen to and sing Karaoke while waiting in the airport.  The songs were geared to seasonal renditions.  What a great way to help pass the time if you had a delayed flight, especially with all these storms across our nation these past couple of weeks.
Here is a link to the article.  I'm not a frequent flyer myself (or a singer), but it would certainly take my mind off sitting in an airport!  I think … (5 comments)

interior decorating: Let's Go Shopping ~ Holiday Decor - 12/05/08 01:37 PM
3 Price Points, 5 Items, Unlimited Possibilities
It was reported in the news in the weeks leading up to Halloween that more pumpkins were purchased this year than in previous years.  In this currently chaotic world of financial insecurity and uncertainty, our families, friends, traditions and holidays give us something known and solid to hold onto.  The familiarity of our holiday traditions and those we celebrate them with are secure footholds in these sometimes trying times.
For those that want to purchase holiday items for the first time, (such as the newlyweds in the family) to those that  just need to … (25 comments)

interior decorating: Halloween On Long Island ~ Haunted Houses - 10/22/08 05:17 AM
As my birthday is on Halloween, I have a special interest in the goings on at this time of year.  While I love the idea of Haunted Houses, I tend to stay away after losing my voice from screaming one year.  At this point in my life, my age is about the only scary thing I can handle on Halloween.
Most of the Haunted Houses listed are not suitable for small children (unless you want to be up with them for nights on end), but there are other events they will enjoy.

interior decorating: Freshen Up Your Home This Fall - 09/07/08 01:16 PM
Gas at $4.00 a gallon, food prices rising, pillows costing $7.00 on airlines, is it any wonder that "staycations" and "cocooning" have become buzz words recently.  With our current economy, more and more people are choosing to stay at home and making do with what they've got. Decorating your home is more important than ever now.  With Fall just around the corner, our thoughts turn back to sprucing up the inside of our homes.
While you may not feel you need a full interior decorating job, many decorators can work with you on an hourly basis for such things as: window … (9 comments)

interior decorating: Fall Into Color ~ Trends for Fall 2008 - 08/29/08 01:08 AM
If you've started receiving your Fall/Winter clothing catalogs, you are ahead of the game in what colors will be the trend in interior decorating this Fall and into 2009. The colors from the Fall fashion lines transition to the colors we see as trends in home décor.  It is not unusual to ask a client what colors they feel good wearing, because you can translate those same colors used in clothing lines into the home.

interior decorating: A Visit To St. John's University - 07/22/08 10:03 AM
Today my husband and I attended the parent orientation at St. John's University in Queens, New York.  My son has been there since Monday morning for a three day freshman orientation; sleeping over in the dorm, meeting new people, learning the rules and what he can expect of college life.
While walking from building to building for the various topics, I took some pictures of this beautiful campus. It is so well maintained and landscaped; seating is everywhere, inviting students to sit and chat or just enjoy the view.
Our visit started here, at the dining hall (to the right) where the … (8 comments)

interior decorating: Hamptons Helicopters Help - 07/06/08 02:24 AM
You know when Summer starts on Long Island because you start to hear the helicopters overhead on Friday evenings as they come from Manhattan and head to the Hamptons.  Then it starts again on Sunday as they all head back to Manhattan.  The stragglers will wait and go Monday morning, when you can usually hear them at about 5:00 a.m.  The problem is they fly over residential areas and their noise pollution interferes with residents enjoying their own backyards.
In April of this year, Senator Schumer announced a plan to help Long Islanders report helicopters flying below (when you can feel … (16 comments)

interior decorating: Home Stager Fees Are Tax Deductible - 04/02/08 03:03 AM

I came across this article this morning from The Kansas City Star that says Home Stager fees paid directly by the Homeowner are tax deductible.  To summarize, it is considered "advertising fees" and falls under allowable selling expenses.  However, while the stager's services are deductible, expenses for repairs, maintenance or permanent redecorating of the house are not.
Homeowners should check with their tax professional.

interior decorating: Add Some Romance To Your Valentine's Day Decorating - 01/27/08 11:43 AM

These tips are simple and easy, requiring almost no time, and items you may already have around your house.  Don't worry about red and pink not matching the rest of your home's décor.  This holiday is more fleeting than Christmas, so it won't affect your overall decorating scheme.
•        Instead of dining where you always do, choose a new spot. Move a small table in front of the fireplace or into the center of your living room.  If the weather permits where you live, go out onto a porch, patio or deck.  A beautiful view, whether mountains, city lights, or the … (9 comments)
