hawi events: Earth Day Weekend in Hawi, Big Island Hawaii

This year we have Earth Day falling the same week as Easter, which has made for a busy time in our little rural community of Kohala on the Big Island. A newer tradition is to celebrate Earth Day with the Trash Bash in downtown Hawi. Usually it includes both a Saturday night Art Show (where all the entries must be made of trash or recycled materials) and a Sunday morning Fashion Show (again with all the costumes of what would usually be considered trash).

This might be the biggest holiday of the year for residents of Kohala. Each year on June 11th, Big Island residents and visitors converge on the birthplace of Kamehameha the Great to watch the placing of hundreds of lei on the statue in Kapa'au and the parade between Hawi and the statue that features pa'u riders in their traditional costumes.

hawi events: Kohala Community Hospital Fundraiser at Hawaii Island Retreat Center

My sweet friend Elizabeth is on the Board of the Kohala Community Hospital Foundation, and she just dropped off our Silent Auction winnings from last Saturday night's annual fundraiser. If you choose to live in Hawi, Kapaau, Puakea Bay Ranch, or any of the other neighborhoods of North Kohala, you can quickly find yourself immersed in the community. The spirit of aloha is contagious! Everyone seems to volunteer for multiple causes and participate in numerous non-profit organization, school, church or community events. We've been blessed to have a volunteer create and maintain an email list for the past few years so that notices of community events, volunteer opportunities, educational offerings, legislative updates and other news of interest to residents of North Kohala (Hawi area). Now they've passed the baton and the new version of the Kohala News has a website and a link so that you too can subscribe to the e-newsletter.
