The US Climate Bill - 07/30/09 09:11 AM
The US Climate Bill received a favorable vote of 219 to 212 by the House of Representatives. The Climate Bill calls for all utilities to secure 15 percent of their electricity from renewable sources like wind, solar, hydro and geothermal energy by 2020. This bill will put a price on greenhouse gases and cap CO2 emissions; it will determine how much Americans pay for energy and the car they drive.

Green Homes & Real Estate. - 07/28/09 10:58 AM
Energy efficient & eco-friendly homes are becoming a main priority to many current and future home buyers. The National Association of Realtors (NAR) conducted a survey back in 2007 and found that 46 percent of people considered the energy efficiency of the property when purchasing a home. That number significantly jumped to 87 percent in 2008 when the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) conducted the same survey.

Recycled Glass Tile Backsplash - Greenovation Blog #4 - 07/17/09 04:07 AM
I'm currently working on a project where I am laying tile on the backsplash around my kitchen.  Will it improve the air quality in the home or reduce my utility expenses?  No, but I took a lot of time choosing the materials carefully so that we are able to minimize waste and utilize recycled resources.  I also completed a tiling class through Arlington County so that I can do the project myself.

The Impact of the Internet on the Environment. - 07/16/09 08:56 AM
How does the internet impact the environment? I am sitting in front of my laptop contemplating this very question. Naturally the energy used to power my laptop and router has a small impact on the environment but nothing substantial, but according to a study cited on CNN.com the internet will be producing 20 percent of the world's greenhouse gases within a decade.

Last weeks Rain Barrel Blog received some interesting feedback, the water butt comments especially attracted my attention. The British do indeed call rain barrels, water butts, and have been doing so for as long as I can remember. In fact collecting water for the garden in a water butt is not a new concept but goes back many years.

Building A Rain Barrel - Arlington VA Greenovation Chapter #3 - 07/09/09 09:32 AM
Every summer we go through periods of drought in Northern Virginia.  The grass starts to get a little browner and the garden starts to wilt.  I never felt comfortable hooking up the hose and sprinkler as it seems like such a waste of water.  This spring I started shopping for a rain barrel.  Rain barrels can be placed under the a downspout to catch rainwater. Using the stored rainwater for gardening needs, saves on utility costs and can also prevent basement flooding.

Green Logos, they are abundant.  Did you ever wonder what each of them stood for, and what environmental issues they covered.  Green companies are springing up everywhere, and some are making misleading environmental claims, whether it be intentional or unintentional. Home Energy Audit in Arlington VA - My Greenovation Blog #2 - 07/01/09 09:57 AM
I recommend a home energy audit as the first place to start with any greening project.  If done correctly, it will provide you with information you can use when deciding how to approach future home improvement projects.  It should also provide you with low hanging fruit that you can go after to achieve energy improvements easily and at a little to no cost.  They may vary slightly by region and by auditor.  Below is a high level summary of our experience with a home energy audit in Arlington VA.
