Today we're with Josephine Stoltzfus of Sprama Design to talk about getting into décor in your home or apartment. Josephine is an experienced Lancaster PA home designer and talks about layering techniques and using color & patterns to pull things together.
While some aspects of design and decoration are best left to a professional in the field, Josephine was enthusiastic about the possibilities that can be explored even on a tight budget using relatively inexpensive pieces. Creative groupings, offsetting pattern sizes and color schemes that can be replaced as your taste changes are some of the ways she lays … (0 comments)

lancaster: Lancaster Liederkranz Sommerfest a great event - 06/10/07 03:30 PM
Yesterday we attended a great Lancaster event - the annual "Sommerfest" held by Lancaster Liedekranz at their Landisville pavilion.  Liederkranz is a well-known county society devoted to preserving and celebrating German culture - and they've been doing so since 1880!  There were hundreds of Lancastrians out to celebrate our area's German heritage (which is extensive - PA "Dutch" country really should be "Deutsch").  The event was a beer 'n brat festival, with authentic German and Austrian dancing for entertainment and participation under the tents.
Outside, the fanous annual "duck race" was held in the adjoining creek.  Each duck is bought as a … (2 comments)

A longtime vocational tech school in Lancaster County is taking a bold new direction by incorporating a "green" building curriculum into it's trade training.  Lancaster Career & Technology Center's (LCCTC) first home, built by students on a site spun off the school's Mount Joy campus, is well under way with regular onsite seminars for guests to see what the students are learning.

The project, entitled "The Community Education Project – Building Green" has generated a lot of goodwill from the state DEP and Lancaster County government.  The National Association of Homebuilders Research Center is a key partner in the project which … (0 comments)

lancaster: Home performance contractors speak out - 04/23/07 03:26 AM
The following 2 paragraphs are from Tamasin Sterner of Pure Energy of Lancaster.  I asked her to comment on what people say when they see her business card the first time and on the industry in general.  Thanks Tamasin!   "Home Performance has been a confusing term for many people.  After looking at my business card, one person asked me if I act in plays in peoples homes...However, I think the building science field called "home performance" will soon be recognizable as more and  more people are becoming interested in green building, healthy homes, and energy efficient homes.   Home Energy Magazine, www.homeenergy.org, and … (5 comments)

lancaster: Northwest end of Lancaster City faces change with drop in student rentals - 04/20/07 09:08 AM
For those who don't know, Franklin & Marshall college has made the move to bring the majority of undergraduate students, into on-campus housing effective this fall.  Estimated at 900, the off-campus student market has a boon to landlords as far back as the 1920's.  What this drastic reduction in tenants will do to the neighborhood housing market, currently enjoying a growth spurt, is unclear.
Some locals say that about 300 students will still be able to rent off-campus for one more year due to continuing construction of dormitories.  Still, a 66% drop in tenants will likely cause many long-term landlords to … (1 comments)
