mountain lifestyle: Feeding the Wild Birds in the Murphy, NC mountains this winter - 01/03/17 04:19 PM
As the winter weather fills our days here in the Murphy NC mountains, don’t forget to feed your wild bird friends.  Not all bird seed mixes will suit all wild birds. Birds will often sort through mixed seed and discard what they do not want. Typically, less waste occurs if you provide only one type of food per feeder, rather than mixed birdseed. Experts recommend black oil sunflower seed as one of the best single seeds to attract a variety of birds to your feeder.

Insect-eating birds, such as woodpeckers, chickadees and nuthatches, will benefit from additional suet in the wintertime. Suet … (3 comments)

Dreaming of that NC Log Cabin on the River? 3BR/3BA  and large game room loft for plenty of company. Outside has open and covered decks and a screened porch with hot tub overlooking the river. This log and stone cabin with metal roof is just off the beaten path so you're close to town, but still the feeling of the surrounding nature. Fires Creek Recreational area, John C. Campbell Folk School and more close by.

mountain lifestyle: Who doesn’t like to do a little gardening in the NC and GA mountains? - 05/08/13 02:10 AM
Who doesn’t like to do a little gardening in the NC and GA mountains?
Who doesn’t like to do a little gardening in the mountains? Sure we had a small garden on our city lot when we lived in South Florida - it was a great space for our son to play outside and pick veggies right out of the garden and help us dig in the dirt. But one thing we really dreamed of while planning our move to the Murphy NC mountains was to have a big garden and plant lots of fruit trees.

When we first moved … (2 comments)

mountain lifestyle: Speechless Sunday in the Murphy, NC mountians - 02/25/12 11:33 PM

Speechless Sunday in the Murphy, NC mountains. This photo is one from a grand old home located just down the road from Murphy, NC and still in Cherokee County in the town of Marble. My what a grand home it must have been back then. Even now with time wearing down on it you can still imagine how filled with family and neighbors it must have been.
Marble is between Andrews and Murphy and this photo was take by our Coldwell Banker High Country Murphy, NC office assistant, Amanda McGaha. Besides being there for all our agents, she is … (10 comments)

Another Speechless Sunday in the Murphy, NC Mountains...
As you drive along some of the back roads in the Murphy, NC and surrounding mountains every once in a while you’ll see a testament of stone, brick or river rock. What stories and memories have these lone sentinels out along the western North Carolina mountainside pastures and fields have from year’s gone by?
These are part of our scenery here in Cherokee County, NC and although Murphy, NC has grown into one of the most desirable destinations to move to, we still have that small town, easy going lifestyle of “living … (5 comments)

Another Speechless Sunday in the Murphy, NC Mountains...
We’ve finally started to get some winter weather here in Cherokee County, NC and at some of the higher elevations they can get much more snow than the valleys and downtown Murphy, NC.  The views from this cabin of the snow topped mountains are amazing - as they are during all the four mild seasons we get to enjoy living here in the western NC, north GA and east TN mountains. In fact, you can actually see all three states from up here on the mountain ridge.

mountain lifestyle: Cherokee Legends - How The Milky Way Came To Be - 02/10/12 01:48 AM

Cherokee LegendsHow The Milky Way Came To Be Long ago when the world was young, there were not many stars in the sky.In those days the people depended on corn for their food. Dried corn could be made into corn meal by placing it inside a large hollowed stump and pounding it with a long wooden pestle. The cornmeal was stored in large baskets. During the winter, the ground meal could be made into bread and mush.

One morning an older man and his wife went to their storage basket for some cornmeal. They discovered that someone or something … (4 comments)
