Folk Art Center on Blue Ridge Parkway - 07/30/10 11:24 PM
I didn't get to visit Maggie Valley today; we are running out of vacation time and my husband loves to go to the Folk Art Center on the parkway.  If you get on the parkway off highway 70 in Swannanoa, it is just minutes up the road...turn to the left and watch for police...they love to sit on the right.  You can read about how the parkway was constructed and how two ladies help resurrect old traditional Appalachian crafts and teach some new ones to the poverty stricken areas in the mountains.  From that concentrated efforts of a few people, today's guild counts … (3 comments)

Playing Tourist in the Blue Ridge Mountains! - 07/29/10 10:48 PM
I had so much fun today at the Gem Mountain Gemstone Mine in Spruce Pine, NC.  My husband is usually a conservative tourist but today, I convinced him to buy us a $50 bucket of rocks to screen for gems, and we spent about two hours sluicing them tray after tray in water and picking out the potential gems.  We found some beautiful stones whether they are valuable only time will tell.  The store appraiser reviewed them and I had some big garnets, small rubies, quartz and a good size emerald plus some stones that were just beautiful with no particular value.  … (6 comments)

North Carolina Something For Everyone! - 07/29/10 10:25 PM
I live at the Carolina Coast but I do enjoy in hot July taking a trip to the NC Blue Ridge Mountains and camping by the Swannanoa River.  For the past couple of years, we have stayed at the KOA in Swannanoa, just outside of Asheville.  It is located central to almost any tourist spot for day trips.  The only element that is a little discouraging that we can't account for is the feeling of sardines in a can.  We have been here in July before but this time the spots seem tighter.  We have discussed this with some others who … (1 comments)

Being the Smallest House Doesn't Seem to be Working in this Market - 07/21/10 11:11 PM

1408 Waterway Drive, North Myrtle Beach, SC is located in Sunset Harbour, a gorgeous waterway community with homes ranging from upper 200,000s to well over $2,000,000.  I have blogged about this property before...price has been reduced to mid 500,000s.  I strolled the community a few weeks ago taking pictures of all the new construction on the waterway side of Waterway Drive and  a few pictures of surrounding homes on the other side. It is the smallest house on the street currently up for sale.  The new owners will be surrounded by multi-million dollar homes, even in this market.

Old Southern Charm at Ocean Isle Beach in Marlee Acres - 07/20/10 11:15 PM
1729 Oak Street SW, Ocean Isle Beach mainland...Today, I listed a gorgeous home (it's half mine so I'm prejudiced) in Marlee Acres, an intracoastal waterway community separated from Ocean Isle Beach by several barrier islands.  Sunset Beach Island is just to the right of the community.  One can be at either beach in just minutes.  Not only is the home full of historic charm but the community is made up of three tree lined streets that run directly from highway 179 to the waterway.  The homeowners' association is strictly voluntary; however, the piers and boat ramp are only available to private … (0 comments)

Good Gracious...Read the Entire Ad!! - 07/13/10 11:26 PM
I recently listed my husband's Cessna 172 airplane on eBay; he can no longer fly due to health issues and my son has a new business so he doesn't have the time.  It has been gathering dust for awhile so after the annual, in a weak moment, I convinced him to let me post it for sale.  I have received a dozen questions by email in the past two days, and 85% of them were answered in the description.  If a potential buyer has difficulty comprehending less than 75 words, how on earth can they buy a home and be expected … (7 comments)

Be Sure to Review the Covenants and Restrictions before You Submit the Offer! - 07/12/10 09:04 PM
In the beach area, homeowners get down right ornery about the rules in their community (probably true everywhere)being followed.  Some communities have a reputation for being downright litigious so it behooves buyers to know in advance how they can use their property.  Once an offer is made and accepted and all the specifics are taken care of...the buyer and seller are ready to close.  In many cases, the new owner is given a copy of the restrictions at closing by the attorney.  If that is the case, it may not be very long before the buyer's agent receives that phone call … (4 comments)

Is It Common in Your Area for the Seller to Pay Closing Costs? - 07/11/10 11:43 PM
I must be missing something.  I watch HGTV and I have seen several agents on these show automatically include a request for half or all of the closing costs.  Who started this situation?  I watched a show today where a young couple offered on a home that had already been reduced.  A agent even told them the price was at market value, and they were offended when the seller rejected their low offer and refused to pay their closing costs.  The buyers finally accepted the counter and they moved on to the inspection.  There was an issue with a water heater support … (11 comments)

125 Immigrants take the Oath of Allegiance in Southport, NC - 07/11/10 01:24 PM
125 immigrants took the oath of allegiance at Sunday afternoon at Ft. Johnson in Southport, NC.  These 125 new American citizens represented 52 countries from around the world.  For the past few years, this ceremony has been incorporated into the Southport, NC annual 4th of July parade which has grown in leaps and bounds.  The festival committee and the Dept. of Homeland Security co-chair this event.  One new citizen said it is a very hard to give up allegiance to one's mother country and give it to another.  Some had relatives who traveled as far away as Kenya to see them take … (0 comments)

NC Top Beach Resort!!! Ocean Isle's The Winds - 07/10/10 10:38 AM
The Winds Resort Beach Club on Ocean Isle Beach has been selected as the #1 resort in North Carolina last month by Resort & Lodges.  Prior to this time, the unique resort was a well-kept secret known only to the returning guest who returned faithfully year after year, and those few who were lucky to pick up available lodging.  It is truly a vacationer's tropical paradise...you would think you were on some exotic island.  Ocean Isle Beach is located on a small barrier island off the coast of NC halfway between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach.  Beaches are pristine and carefully maintained.  … (0 comments)

A cleaning product that can cause you grief! - 07/09/10 11:08 PM
We've been warned over and over about using bleach carelessly but it cleans so great.  Dull sinks, disinfecting counter tops, cutting through grease and other stains are just a very few of the reasons most people use bleach (outside the laundry).  My sister-in-law was making up spray bottles of bleach long before it was commercially available.  Her family owned restaurants so I adopted her habit years ago.
I wrote a blog once about jetted tubs in vacation homes and how dangerous it is for the females in the home.  Mold forms in the pipes from the little bit of water left … (9 comments)

Most Inexpensive Home in Brunswick County, NC??? - 07/08/10 11:18 PM
A few years ago, my first client was a single mother with a young son who called me one Sunday afternoon while I was on floor duty about a property in Sunset Beach  she had found in the newspaper.  I met her at the property after I left the office and it was a fixer trailer(putting it kindly).  We chatted for a few minutes and I suggested that she speak to a loan officer the next morning which she did.  He called me very shortly after she left with a price range that she could afford.  I ran a search only to … (3 comments)

Old Country Porches Are Neighbor Friendly - 07/05/10 11:28 PM
I battled with my builder/husband two years ago when we were building this house.  He did not want to build the wrap around porch; he wanted to keep the screened porch but incorporate the exterior porch into heated square feet.  We argued for days, and I won; primarily because I thought it gave the house character and maintained the arts & craft style that I was aiming for.  Like everything else the day we finished the property, it was listed for sale.  Of course, the market went into a decline and we took it off the market for several months.  We are getting … (3 comments)

Everyday I Fight the Urge To Become A Hermit!! - 07/01/10 11:35 PM
Have we learned anything in the past three years?  Do our leaders really want to encourage the traits that made our nation strong, such as, self-reliance, hard work, and being responsible for your actions.  I don't think so.  I truly believe if you gave $1,000,000 to every citizen in our country, and came back five years down the road.  The poor would be poor, again and the wealthy would be richer.  Of course, there would be exceptions.  What set me off?  My husband and I own a home at a lake not too far from the beach.  There is a small town built … (5 comments)
