relocation package: Relocating to the West Bank? Let's Go Shopping! - 03/27/09 06:53 AM
I don’t know about anyone else, but if I was relocating to a new city one of my first questions about getting around would be “where can I buy ____?” Part of getting acclimated is finding out where to shop in your new community and the West Bank has plenty of choices within a short drive of both military bases or wherever else your relocation might land you.
Shopping Mall Oakwood Center in Terrytown is the only true mall on the West Bank. With department stores Dillard’s, JC Penney’s and Sears as anchors, the mall is still filling spaces left after … (4 comments)

relocation package: Where Did You Go to School? - 02/29/08 01:03 AM
Ask any native New Orleanian that question and the answer will almost always be the name of their high school.  It doesn't matter if they have a doctorate from the most prestigious Ivy League university in the country, in New Orleans it's all about what high school you attended!  Folks who relocate to New Orleans may find this a little odd, especially given the great colleges and universities located right here in the city, but to me it's just part of the charm of my hometown.
Despite the fact that we are all proud of our high school alma mater, New … (23 comments)

The boxes are unpacked, the new curtains are hung in the windows and the pantry has been filled.  The flurry of activity involved in moving has subsided.  You are a new resident in an unfamiliar city with small children - wondering, What now?
Any move can be difficult, but if you are relocating to a new city as a stay at home mom, it can be even harder to adjust.  Spending your days at home with the kids can make it tough to meet new people and make new friends.  With four children of my own, I can relate to the stress … (11 comments)

relocation package: New Orleans, LA: A Gardener's Dream - 02/07/08 06:57 AM
Relocating to a new climate can be a shock to many, especially those who love their gardens.  If I ever moved to the north, dealing with ice and snow would be difficult, at best, and the shorter growing seasons would definitely present a challenge.  I'm used to being able to get fresh, locally grown produce every week at a local farmer's market or fruit and vegetable stand.  If you are a gardener relocating to New Orleans, you will be both pleased and amazed at the variety you can grow here in southeastern Louisiana.
Since our winters are fairly mild, there is a … (17 comments)

relocation package: Military Relocations to NAS JRB New Orleans - 01/03/08 09:27 AM
Welcome to New Orleans!
Moving into a new area is always a bit of a challenge, especially when you don't have the luxury of a lot of time to decide on a new home.  As a military transferee with orders in hand, you are faced with deciding where to live rather quickly.  Most people who have never been to the New Orleans area don't know much about us except for what they've seen on TV.  Speaking as a native, I can tell you that there is a whole lot more to the city than Mardi Gras and Bourbon Street.

relocation package: Buying A Piece of History - 12/17/07 04:40 AM
One of the things I love about the New Orleans area is the fact that we don't have too many cookie cutter houses.  There are wonderful areas to live that are not part of "subdivisions"...they are neighborhoods in the true sense of the word.  Some of the most beautiful areas to live in are older, established and, in some cases, deemed historic.
To me, any house over 75 years old is a historic home.  Lucky for us, we have a large selection of homes that give us a peek into the history of our city and the surrounding area.  Some of them … (11 comments)

relocation package: Moving to Algiers, LA? Here's What You Need to Know... - 12/11/07 03:47 PM

Algiers is the only part of the city of New Orleans located on the West Bank of the Mississippi River and feels more like a small town than part of a metropolitan area.  A large number of people (like me!) who grew up in Algiers have stayed to raise their own families here, making it a very friendly community to live in.  We actually live next door to family, which is not so uncommon here.
Algiers Point is the historic portion of upper Algiers, settled in the early 1700's and placed on the National Register of Historic places in 1978.  Insider tip:  … (7 comments)
