One of the first things potential buyers take notice of when they visit a property for sale are the floors. Paying attention to the condition of the flooring is an important step when staging a home and this post features two products that I depend on and might help you Get a Grip and Make it Shine. When it comes to flooring in a staged home it's important that the floors are not only clean but sparkle. Not every staging budget has new flooring in mind and working with what you have should not mean settling for dull and worn-out looking floors.

Rug Gripper

I often use area rugs in design to help define seating areas and protect high traffic zones from excessive wear, scuffing, and dirt. Unfortunately rugs, particularly on smooth surfaces can slip, bunch and can pose a serious tripping hazard. One cost effective product that I've found, Lok Lift Rug Gripper, can be cut to size and applied to the back of area rugs and mats to keep them securely in place and stop them from slipping. I've had mixed results when it's carpet on carpet but it works very well on wood, tile, and linoleum. One side effect is that residual adhesive may stick to the floor after-wards and will have to be removed.

  • Available in 2 sizes: 4" x 25' and 6" x 25';
  • Can be cut to appropriate length with household scissors
  • Will not damage rugs or floor but might leave adhesive behind.
  • Environmentally safe and nontoxic
  • Made in the USA
  • Zep Floor FinishLinoleum and tile, over time can get scuffed and dull, so much so, that not even waxing will help revitalize them. One product I've had great success with that not only gives shine to old floors but keeps them shiny even in high traffic areas is Zep Commercial High traffic Floor Finish. This exceptionally durable product is made from an acrylic copolymer that requires little maintenance and keeps a high gloss finish for months at a time. It suggests not to use it on wood floors, natural stone, granite, marble, painted or stained concrete. However, I've used it on slate with out issue.

  • Durable, minimal maintenance finish
  • Easy to apply (4 coats) 1gal=2000sqf
  • Resists scuffing
  • Meets slip-resistance standards
  • Dries in 30 minutes

    Kimo....

Good tips for staging and keeping things in place, especially if no one is in the house to straighten up.

    Thanks for the tips!

Aloha Kimo ~ The rug gripper looks like a good product.  At home I have the gripper that you cut to fit the size of your area rug.  This is a nice alternative.  Thanks for sharing!

Aloha Kimo, great info. I have used Zep products before and have found them to be good.It really is remarkabale what a shiny floor can do for a property. As most people today, unlike the 50's & '60S when the lady of house lived and died by her shiny floor, don't take the time to polish their floors it really makes an impact when you enter a home  and see one shining back at you. Most people clean, but they don't polish.

For small rugs I have used the rubber rings from the tops of mason canning jars to keep them in place. Simple and effective and inexpensive.

Great information on flooring!  It is important that they look their absolute best as this is a common asset that everyone highlights in a home.

Aloha Thom & Ray, thank you for commenting. These are very handy low maintenance products.

Aloha Kathy, those rubber under-mats can be cumbersome and expensive but the Lok-lift Gripper is  fast and easy.

Aloha Michelle, there is nothing quite like a super shinny floor! Thanks for the Mason Jar rubber ring tip!

Aloha Melissa, I've been very pleased in how these products perform especially the low maintenance part.

Aloha Tom, I've had a few spills myself over unsecured rugs and it's always better to be safe than sorry. Thanks for stopping by!
