Ex hippies, yuppies and college students of a certain age may remember, in the summer of 1969, seeing ads for "3 Days of Peace and Music" posted around Greenwich Village in New York City, college campuses, and other places where the young and hip were likely to find it.

I almost got to the Woodstock Festival myself - entirely by accident!  My fiancee and I had planned to go for the weekend upstate to the Concord Hotel & Resort in Monticello, NY, where I had previously worked.

We were surprised to find heavy traffic on route 9W that seemed more like weekday rush hour traffic than that of a typical Saturday.  As the traffic became stop-and-go and finally ground to a halt, I began to be concerned that there might be a serious accident ahead.

Finally, after waiting at a standstill for quite a long time, i decided that it might be better to turn around and go back home rather than possibly be stuck on the road all night.

It was only after we were home that we found out the real reason for the delays:  a little noticed rock festival had become a seminal event, with so many youths unexpectedly arriving that they finally crashed the fences and got past the promoters, who then wisely decided to make the rest of the festival free.

Jimi Hendrix, Joan Baez, Joe Cocker, Richie Havens, Roger Daltry, Country Joe & the Fish and other stars of the day attained iconic status after Woodstock.  Other festivals tried to copy the success of Woodstock afterward, but none ever achieved the popularity or the peaceful behavior of the original.

Update: one of the four original Woodstock promoters tried to create a 40th Anniversary festival for August of 2009, but was forced to call it off after being unable to raise the necessary $8-10 million from sponsors to finance and promote it...

Brian - but how come I haven't aged 40 years in that same time? What a fantastic and influential event that was. Unfortunately, I was headed in a different direction at the time, as in the far east.

Mike, I'm convinced that we are the first generation to have discovered how to stay young and hip all our lives...

Brian - Even though hippies & yuppies were never really my style, I was born in the wrong generation... at least musically.  I would have loved to attend that event.  The only band I would have added to that list is The Doors:)

I wasn't young and hip in 1969 since I was only 9, but I was a budding pianist!

Jim, I was a budding pianist at 9, too - but I couldn't take a piano to college so I got a guitar...

Hi Brian, I have just been watching Woodstock on TV tonight - what a great blast from the past. There will only be one Woodstock. I saw Jimi Hendrix at Red Rocks and Country Joe in Boulder -- it was a great time to grow up, I'm glad I didn't miss it.

Hi Mary, I loved the documentary that was made of Woodstock.  The Woodstock theme sung by Crosby, Stills & Nash epitomizes the time and feeling for me, even though it was never performed until after the Woodstock festival itself.

I am really jealous you all had the ability to grow up in those wonderful times.  There truly never will be another generation like that.  What are your fondest memories of that time?

Brian, there are so many wonderful memories of those times - being in on the folk singing revival with Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger & many others - fraternity parties that were reminiscent of "Animal House" - various girl friends, each with a different personality - working at a resort hotel much like Patrick Swayze's in "Dirty Dancing" - it was a great time to be alive...

Still have, and occassionally listen to, the old albums from that era.  Unfortunately, for me, it was way to far away fro a 16 year old to go to.

Did get to the Califronia Jam a couple of years later though.

Wonderful time of life.

Erby, I still have the old albums.  The true measure of how good that music was is that it withstood the test of time.  Except for the fact that recording technology wasn't as sophisticated 40 years ago as it is now, those artists and songs still sound as good today as they ever did.

Toula, if I had known what was going on, I probably would have liked to have been a part of history.  I certainly loved the music, if not the mud and drugs.  I would have taken totally different clothes, though - we had prepared for a weekend at a resort!

I have a blog post about the couple that graced the cover of Time (that famous cover), they live here in Pine Bush and are still married.  Imagine that!
