Magic Jack online phone service? Is this as good as it sounds?

A mortgage broker that I have worked with in the past just e mailed me that she has cancelled her regular landline phone, and gone with this device.  Apparently, you plug it into your computer, and it will provide phone service for under $20.00 per year.  Your phone number becomes portable, as long as you have a laptop with you that can access the high speed internet.  My phone bills, landline and wireless, are well over $300.00 per month.  Even a savings of $100.00 would be remarkeable.  Has anyone else used this system, or is it another case of too good to be true?

Service way out here is too iff-y but I've heard of this and will be curious to see if people in more urban areas are using it and with what degree of satisfaction.

I was just talking with a friend who bought the Magic Jack and according to them got the jack and 5 years of service for $54.00.  They love it.  They are taking the magic jack with them on vacation along with their laptop and plan to take calls 1000.s of miles from home.  Apparently it really works.  Walgreens Drug Stores carry them. FYI.
