Go Back to Your Roots

I have seen a lot of articles recently on ActiveRain about maintaining and creating strong client relationships.  And while all of the articles that I’ve seen have been great and filled with wonderful tips, I’ve noticed that no one writes about going back to the basics.

Now-a-days everyone is focused on the newest technology and the up-and-coming latest trends.  Go back to the basics and reap the benefits.  How did agents get started? Go back to those roots and try mailings or door-to-door interaction.

Flowers don’t just appear; you have to plant your seeds and make sure they are getting sunshine and water.  It’s the same with clients.  While being proactive in the ever-evolving social media realm is highly important to share and receive information from your clients, don’t forget to water and provide sunshine to the one place that is often stuck in the shade- clients’ homes.

Magnets are a great way to plant your seed in their homes because they often carry useful information that the client will reference for months or even years to come.  And, best of all, magnets get prime advertising space for fractions of a penny per impression.  No hassle, no hidden advertising fees, no updates necessary.

Magnets are also extremely versatile.  Hand them out at public gatherings or walking down the street, give them to friends and family to hand out as referrals, or, leave them in other businesses for people to pick up.  If you really want to surprise your clients or prospects, go a more personal route; mail them to their homes or hand deliver them door-to-door.

If you’re thinking of doing a yearly mailing, Magnetic Calendars from Magnets USA® are fabulous.  If you’re looking to hang around longer, go for a magnet that has your information printed directly on it with important numbers, handy kitchen measures, or any of our other formats with indispensable information.  This is easy, maintenance-free advertising in disguise.  The client will view the magnet as valuable and practical information to keep in their home; in turn, you are actually using this magnet to remind them every day that you are there for them when they need their friendly, local real estate agent.

Once you get these seeds planted firmly, then it’s time to grow the flower- promote your blogs, your Twitter accounts and Facebook Pages.  Keep up the proactive spirit- just don’t forget to trace back every now and then to plant more seeds and nurture the ones you already have in the ground.

I couldn't agree more! I think several agents have forgotten about the basics. I send my clients a birthday card in addition to promotional mailings to keep me fresh in their minds.

Hi Katie,

I can't remember the last time anyone other than my immediate family even said "happy birthday" on the actual day! Your clients are probably so thankful for your thoughtfulness.  Promotional mailings are always important, but that extra personal touch is most likely what your clients will remember for years to come.  Best wishes!

I don't do anything personal like this, maybe I should consider. We get so caught up in the impersonal things like mass email marketing that we forget we are dealing with people making the biggest purchase of their lives.

Good morning, Tim!

That is a great point! I just bought my first home back in June and it was definitely eye-opening and I don't know what I would have done without my Realtor!

You can also look at it this way- wouldn't it make you feel good if someone that provided a service for you sent you a little gift, or came knocking on  your door just to say hi each year? It makes you feel like you invested wisely in hiring them; and it makes you feel appreciated as a client.  These small things are how your clients will remember you most.

Have a great day!
