When the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) released its 2007 population estimates for the 16-county area of North Central Texas, Wylie's population was estimated at 35,400. This estimate represents a 134% increase from Wylie's population of 15,132 from the 2000 US Census.
According to the Texas State Data Center Population Estimates Program report released in November 2006, Wylie is the 95th largest city in Texas based on January 1, 2006 population estimates. In addition, Wylie had the 2nd largest increase in population growth among cities with a population greater than 20,000.
In 2005, the City of Wylie was selected by the Dallas Business Journal as one of the Top 50 "Best Places to Work" in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
The City has been cited by North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) for its approach to development planning and preservation of its commercial downtown.
In 2002, the City of Wylie Fire Department received an ISO class rating of 1. Currently, Wylie is one of only eight Texas cities to have an ISO class rating of 1.
Wylie continues to have the lowest crime rate in Collin County for cities with a population greater than 10,000.
Rita and Truett Smith Public Library received the 2005 Achievement of Excellence in Libraries Award by the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association (TMLDA).
Building Inspections received the 2002 Texas Municipal League's Management Innovation Award of Excellence for the first city in Texas to implement handheld inspection and printing program. This allows inspections to be more efficient and perform an average of 25-30 inspections a day.
The Parks & Recreation department completed a Master Plan to serve as a blueprint for the park and recreation system to meet the community's needs as population continues to grow. At this time, the City has 12 parks and comprising more than 183 acres of parkland.
