BLOGS vs. PERSONAL WEB SITE

By
Real Estate Agent with Principle Broker / Owner

This topic should stimulate some interest due to the rapidly changing technology climate of Blog popularity.

Most Realtor's personal web sites fail to drive business to themselves.  The biggest problem with is the lack of knowledge by the Realtor in working with their webmaster to effectively communicate what they need the web site to accomplish and the return on their investement strategy (ROI).  Then, there's the problem with most web masters in they do not understand enough about real estate to understand the Realtor's needs and expectations.  This creates a "web" (pun intended) of complexity for the Realtor and Webmaster!

Also, since there are gazillions of web sites on the Net, just how does a web site owner get visibility of their site to all those curious seekers?  Well, that has created a whole industry of bumping up web site visibilty in Yahoo, Google, Ask.com, and many other search engines.  And that cost MONEY!

So this brings us to BLOGS.  Blogs are FREE!  Active Rain is a brainchild to fulfill the wonderlust of techno-savvy Realtors and allied industy professionals.  Let's admit, all of us with a business-centric cost model prefers something for FREE than paying for it because the more we pay the less is in our savings/investment account!

So, is the trend going to move us away from personal web sites and onto a healthy network of Blogs to market ourselves and what we deliver?

What say you?

blogging is also an excellent source of information useful for both the consumer and the Realtor.

We all gain insight to how others run their business, market conditions and trends, tips and advise on many arenas involved in the RE process. No two transactions are ever the same, (except the forms they are wriiten on) and a forum like this seems to be the new wave of our growing technology.

I think Jim over at the Real Estate Tomato says it best, and I know Kevin Warmath agrees with him as he reminded me of it the other day. You need both a web site and a blog.

"An analogy to help understand the difference: Think of your personal website as a brochure.  Think of a blog as the editorial section of a newspaper. "

Web sites are crafted marketing message.

Blog sites are the "backstory" of you as a person to shine thru.

I think it's a combination of the 2 - each with different purposes.

Most people have heard of a blog, but how many people really know what they are and regularly read them? Not very many. I recommend having a blog on your web site, to pull in traffic from all of those blog search engines. Try to post backlinks to your main blog on your AR blog. Write a few paragraphs about a topic discussed on your main blog then post a link. The goal of AR is to drive business to you, not spend all day writing content to make AR get all the traffic and money.
