Mosquito is a member of the family Culicidae. These insects have a pair of scaled wings, a pair of halteres, a slender body, and long legs. The females of most mosquito species suck blood (hematophagy) from other animals[1]. This blood sucking characteristic has made mosquitoes one of the most deadly vectors known to man, literally killing millions of people over thousands of years and continuing to kill millions per year.[1], [2] Size varies but is rarely greater than 16 mm (0.6 inch)[2]. Mosquitoes weigh only about 2 to 2.5 mg (0.03 to 0.04 grain). A mosquito can travel up to 10km in a night, and fly for 1 to 4 hours continuously at up to 1-2 km/hr[3]. Most species are nocturnal or dawn or evening feeders (crepuscular). During the heat of the day most mosquitoes land in a cool place and wait for the evenings. They may still bite if disturbed.[4]

Mosquito Treatment
> Pass this on to anyone who likes sitting out in the evening or when
> they're having a cook out.
>
> So you don't like those pesky mosquitoes, especially now that they have
> the potential to carry the West Nile Virus?
>
> Here's a tip that was given at a recent gardening forum. Put some water in
> a white dinner plate and add a couple drops of Lemon Fresh Joy dish
> detergent. Set the dish on your porch, patio, or other outdoor area.
>
> Not sure what attracts them, the lemon smell, the white plate color, or
> what, but mosquitoes flock to it, and drop dead shortly after drinking the
> Lemon Fresh Joy/water mixture, and usually within about 10 feet of the
> plate.
>
> Check this out---it works just super! May seem trivial, but it may help
> control mosquitoes around your home, especially in the South and elsewhere
> where the West Nilevirus is reaching epidemic proportions in mosquitoes,
> birds, and humans. Pass it along!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, those pesky guys are a problem in Hawaii too.  Thanks for the tip.  I wonder if I can just pick a fresh lemon off my tree and squeeze that in the dish.  I'll let you know if it works.
