First Impressions include your Website

As I have noted numerous times in many of my blogs “You only get one chance to make a first impression” notably said by Dale Carnegie, and while we all know he meant this in a personal meeting situation, this also applies to your website. It is vital that you build a website that attracts new clients and keeps existing clients coming back. If you are taking the time to build and promote a website, take the time to do it correctly. Web users are not going to choose you if upon visiting your site they encounter a half hearted, poorly constructed site.

When choosing a domain name go with .com and avoid using the less remembered .org, or .net etc. Keep your domain name simple, easy to remember, and easy to spell. While you will be using .com for your domain name, be sure to also purchase the .net and .org names as well.

Be sure to design your site to reflect who you are, as well as appealing to your target audience. As with your domain name KISS (keep it simple stupid) is a good rule of thumb. A well thought out, well put together website that delivers a nice design and valuable information is what you are looking for. Keep the flash and bling to a minimum.

Update your content regularly, if you blog, be sure to ensure that your latest blog is posted on your site. There are many different CMS’s (content management system) to help you do this yourself, without the need to be a full fledged web geek.

Keep track of your websites activity. This is easily done for free by utilizing such web hosts as Google Analytics. Analytics supplies a variety of different stats to keep you informed of who visits, for how long, as well a myriad of other useful reports.

Learn how to utilize search engine optimization (SEO). This will take some time and effort, but it is a must. There is no reason to create a website if you are not going to utilize it to its fullest potential.

As you learn more and more you will develop a better understanding how all this works, and will therefore be able to better manage your site. It is no secret that the future of advertising either in the Real Estate industry or most any other industry will be internet driven. Print media is dying or already dead, so if you want to stay in the game you will need a website. I work on my website constantly, making little changes here and there as I learn, and look at it from time to time. It is a god habit to get into....

I do research on line before I buy almost anything.

These days, it's is usually a website our clients see before they even meet us.

Thanks for the tips Gerry.  If someone doesn't like what they see on my website, they're sure not going to call me.

Well thought out post, Gerry. You are right, your website reflects who you are and if that is not easy to navigate, people are not going to call you to help them through it.  I am still working on getting mine up to scratch (in my spare time :).

Real common sense stuff, yet so few follow it. I review and tweak my site weekly trying to improve its effectiveness

A good website is great but if no one is finding it the site doesn't matter.  Driving people to it is most important for sure.
