Moving. The word can bring up feelings ranging from happiness and excitement to exhaustion and dread. No matter where you fall on the scale, these tips can help your next move be a smooth one.
What to do 6-8 weeks before the big day:
- Determine which items you wish to take to your new home. Items you don't need should either be donated to charity or sold at a garage sale. You may consider teaming up with your neighbors who want to sell some of their belongings and hold a "neighborhood sale."
- If you plan on packing your own items, start collecting packing supplies. You can purchase all these materials from any van line agent or moving supply company. Their boxes are specifically designed to prevent damage to household goods.
- Think about the layout of your new place and where you'll put your furniture. Create a floor plan on graph paper and sketch the furniture placement. This will relieve stress (and backache) of making those decisions with the actual furniture.
- Get familiar with your new community. Request information on schools, community programs, parks and recreation from the local Chamber of Commerce.
- Now is the best time to make travel plans (hotel, flights, car rental, etc.). Try to keep your arrangements flexible to accomodate those inevitable last-minute hiccups.
- Keep all receipts for moving related expenses in a designated envelope. Many are tax deductible. (Ask your accountant!)
- Keep all insurance, medical and dental records in a safe yet accessible place. Plan to take vital documents and one-of-a-kind valuables seperately from your other posessions.
The next installment will cover what to do 4-5 weeks before your move.
