Do You Enjoy Time Travel Movies? A small trip back in time right through my kitchen!
I think I would truly enjoy time travel...maybe some day it will be possible. :)
I do take time trips, in a way... I love antiques shops, and of course, if you look long enough, you begin to have a "list". My list has included a wood burning kitchen range.
Not just any range, but the perfect "old" wood burning kitchen range
Just like home buyers, who have their own vision of the "perfect" home.
It is perfection for their situation, their desires, their lifestyle, their family, what makes them smile when they think about it, ... so my idea of the perfect "old" stove might not be yours. You may not want to be anywhere near an appliance that was built before 2009 :)
I grew up in a home with a white enamel and cast iron wood burning cookstove. In fact, it had wood on one end and gas on the other... strange combination of fuels when you think about it!
I did not want to purchase one very far from home and have to deal with either buying sight unseen, or traveling a long distanc to view and then deal with getting it home... I did not want a useless antique, I wanted it to be functional and in good shape, not just a pretty face!
Just when I had decided that it wasn't going to happen, up pops a listing on Craig's List.
A family in a town about an hour away restores and sells antinque wood stoves. They had a Craig's List ad for their antique stoves.
They had them in a small building in the back yard and they had some pretty ones, pumpkin and creme colors, mint green and white, etc. and a couple that were solid black with chrome trim but we decided on the white and black one.
It had not had any repairs done to it, had original parts and was in good shape.
I would pass on their contact info but they are moving and moving the stove business also to another part of Oklahoma.
My choice of stove is probably not as old as some of the others that they had, and definitely not as fancy, but I love it! It even has the copper water reservoir intact and in good shape.
When you have an empty nest and a fairly large home, sometimes you fill it up with things...I guess I plead guilty.
My new acquistion is meant to replace an earth stove in my sunroom, but who knows, I am just go ahead and put it in my kitchen as an addition, I've got a place reserved for it.It would be the perfect complement for the electric range that I have.
Now comes the fun part.. The plate inside the oven indicates that this is a Mascot Stove made in Chatanooga, Tennessee. The plate inside the oven says "1836-9 Mascot Stove Co, Chattanooga Tennessee - White ENMEL" That is not a type-o.
So the research began but it didn't get far. According to the STANDARD HISTORY OF GEORGIA AND GEORGIANS BY LUCIAN LAMAR KNIGHT, published in 1917, Mr.James Franklin James had 4 patents that pertained to wood burning ranges. According to the book where it talks about his patents, he incorporated them into a wood burning range "Kitchen Kumfort" manufactured by Mascot Stove company, of which he was president. The new principles in range construction was acknowledged by all the best authorities. He described his improvements thus:
"First - A stationary damper plate placed between top of stove and top oven-plate, with openings fo rheat to pass throug. Second - A damper slide with openings to co-act with openings in damper plate, capable of blocking all or any part of the hat in its passae to flue or stovepipe and causing it to travel through down-draft flue in front and under oven, makeing a complete circuit an producing a more equal distribution of heat in all parts of theoven than is possible with other ranges. Third= a Flue at each end, top and bottom of oven, front flue being between fire-bx and fron toven plate. The heat in passing out of fire-bos down front flue begins heating the oven at once, this resutling in a great saving in fuel and a cooler kitchen in the summer, as the ehat is under control. When damper is clsoed, heat is held in range, keeps the oven hot and does not rdiate out in the kitchen to the discomfort of the housewife." "I short it may consistently be said that that the "kitchen Kumfort" range has all of the good points of the other =high=grade ranges manufactured and in addition has special advantages tha are of great importance and value and that cannot be claimed fo rany other range. It bakes bread in three to five minutes and browns top and bottom alike, and that without any shifting of pans."
In November 1912, Mr.James resigned from the Chattanooga Roofing and Foundry company and moved to Dalton, Georgia. In December, he established the Mascot Stove Manufacturing Company for $20,000 in Dalton (He had retained the title of this previous corporation from Chattanooga, TN.)
James had married Miss Effie alice Deakins, granddaughter of the Honary Jonathan Tipton who was governor of Tennessee during the War of 1812. One of her relaivtes, James J. Copeland was the attorney for the Mascot Stove and Foundry Company of Dalton.
The stove that I purchased has Mascot Stove on it's plate along with Chattanooga, TN but Mr. James moved to Dalton Georgia in late 1912 and re-established his stove company there.. BUT I think the range that I purchased is probably more like a 1930 stove??
Maybe someone will read this who knows more information and will share...but for now, I'm just pleased that I found what I wanted!
