Why Realtor's Can Broadcast More Easily Now Than Ever

The following video is another in the TED presentation series. It identifies an interesting trend that aligns with my own opinion; that it's easier for Realtor's to own their local market now more than ever before.

In the video Rachel Sterne, CEO of GroudReport.com, explains how the news is increasingly created by the general public versus large media and news organizations.

If today was my first day in real estate my initial marketing plan would include creating a blog for my community. I would contact the local Chamber of Commerce, every BNI group, charity and networking organization with an offer to highlight their next event, their latest recruiting effort or fund raising initiative. Why would they say no? It's free advertising! And with a small amount of traffic I would issue a press release announcing the blog. I would contact the local newspaper with a request to report on 'the' community blog and would hope they didn't realize I was a new a citizen journalist and therefore a competitor. And of course the blog would also detail data about the property market.

One objective would be for everyone to know my name and therefore my brand and what I do.

It's important to identify that 'citizen journalism' is open to everyone including Realtors. Creating a community blog with exposure via Facebook pages, YouTube and twitter (three of literally hundreds of available options) offers an opportunity for a real estate agent to be the 'go to' person in their community and therefore to own their market.

That real estate is local (versus national or global) makes news reporting and community commentary even easier. So how will you become part of the fourth estate?
