Is Nyssa really your name?  Or is that short for something? I knew you were dying to ask!Nyssa Smith name logo

Yes. Nyssa is really my name!  No. It is not short for something else.  And no, I am not named after Nyssa from Doctor Who.

So then, how did I get my name?  And how is it pronounced?  Nyssa (pronounced like Lisa) is a name of Greek origin, meaning beginning.  My mom read it in a book when she was pregnant with me and liked it.  So that's how I got the name.  We never knew the real meaning or the origin of the name until many years later when I was in high school.  When in high school, I had to do a leaf collection.  In the process of creating that leaf collection, I had to gather various leaves and do research about each leaf.  What tree was the leaf from and what was the scientific names of each.  To my amazement, Nyssa is the scientific name to a Black Gum tree!  Yes, a Black Gum tree!  How cool is that!?  Nyssa sylvatica is the scientific name to a Black Gum tree.  Not only was I excited to find that out, but so were my parents!

Nyssa sylvatica

Later, as an adult, with the explosion of the world wide web, I had another Nyssa search me out!  Not only does she have the name Nyssa, but she also has the last name Smith!  With such a unique name, she was curious what other Nyssa's were out there.  So she googled her name (Nyssa Smith) and found me (Nyssa Smith)!  Since I was in real estate and had lots of info on the web, she easily found me!  It was really cool to get introduced to her.  She's in California.  Or at least she was at the time.  She told me that our name is of Greek origin.  She actually told me that our name means "begining of the end."  Now, I actually find that to be super intriquing!  I think that's really cool!

My next encounter with the meaning of my name was from a couple of my friends.  They had taken a vacation and came back with a beautiful plaque for me!  I actually have this up on display on one of my shelves in my home office.  When my friends saw it, they immediately thought of me and they thought how perfectly the words fit me!  Here's what the plaque says:

"Nyssa, a name of Greek origin meaning "beginning"; Convinced of the innate goodness of mankind; Is never parted from loved ones who are in her heart; Knowing a friend creates a new world within her; Believes in living every day completely; Brings joy to the lives of those around her; A person who can enjoy the innocent smile of a child; What a wonderful friend to have in time of need!"

So that's me!  That's my name!  That's how I got it!  That's what I know about it!  And what a nice compliment from my friends!!!  They think it perfectly fits me.  How about you?

P.S. I also know that it's a name of a town in Oregon.  Nyssa, Oregon.  I've never been there...

Nyssa! What a great name and great origin! Your friends obviously love you and your wonderful presence in their lives. How odd that there is another Nyssa Smith!

I am so glad you wrote a post on the origin of your name.  It's so unique and I would have probably thought it very odd that there would be another Nyssa Smith except that Tron is not a common last name and there is another Irene Tron in the world.  What is a bit odd is that we actually have quite a bit in common and yet in one thing we are at complete opposite ends of the spectrum.

Larry~ Thanks!  Come back and visit my blog any time!

Stephanie~ What a nice thing to say!  Thank you!

Irene~ That's a very interesting story!  Thank you for sharing!  That does surprise me that there is another Irene Tron!

Chris and Stephanie~ Thanks!  Yes, I think it's really cool!  I used to hate having such a unique name when I was young because I always needed to pronounce it for people and had to spell it for people and people would always get it wrong.  But now I love it!  I love having it be so unusual.  People don't tend forget it!  And it sets me apart as being different.  And that's how I do business anyway.  I'm totally an out of the box thinker.  So it suits me perfectly!  Good thing I married a Smith!  To think, I used to have to spell Nyssa AND Kormanski!  Now I just have to spell Nyssa!  ;~)

The first time I ever heard about the other Irene Tron was many years ago when my mother-in-law worked for an insurance company and a claim came through for Irene Tron who lived in a different state than me!  The world seems so small sometimes.

Hi June!  Thanks for the nice words!  You are so sweet!  That is so thoughtful of you!  Also glad you liked the video.  I posted it on the front page of my website.  It was one of the first videos I shot.  When I tried it more and more to make it better, it just got worse and worse.  Almost canned.  And I don't like that.  So, what you see if what you get!  Sometimes those first shots are the most authentic and genuine.  So I ran with it. Glad it comes across well.  It's hard to critique your own stuff.  So I appreciate your input!  =)

San Diego, CA

Hey, Nyssa - Nyssa is the genus name for the tupelo trees. Your Nyssa sylvatica is actually a tupelo and not a gum, so where you have black gum as two words, it's actually blackgum as one word. It's more widely known as the black tupelo, but there are regional names such as blackgum.

Here are your tupelos:

  • Nyssa aquatica - Water Tupelo
  • Nyssa biflora - Swamp Tupelo
  • Nyssa javanica - Indonesian Tupelo
  • Nyssa leptophylla - Hunan Tupelo
  • Nyssa ogeche - Ogeechee Tupelo
  • Nyssa sinensis - Chinese Tupelo
  • Nyssa sylvatica - Black Tupelo
  • Nyssa ursina - Bear Tupelo
  • Nyssa yunnanensis - Yunnan Tupelo

Nyssa Cox

Hello -

My name is Nyssa as well!  Pronounced like Nissa (kiss/miss/hiss with an A).  And I am actually named after the Dr. Who character!  My parents were huge fans in the 80s when I was born and I got the name!  I now work for an aquatic design/landscape design company and recently learned about the tree as well.  Just wanted to say hello since I found this thread!  I always get my name mis-pronounced as well as "Is it your real name?" "What is it short for?"  Or the people who like to call me Nessa or Vanessa because they just assume that is my "real" name.

Sheesh!

Bye!
