I Remember When

By
Real Estate Agent with Greenwood Realty ( Greenwood SC )

I Remember When there was only one telephone in the house and it was in the hallway on shelf built into the wall and you if you were fortunate you only shared the line with one other party. It was called a two party line. You would have to pick up the phone and listen before you dialed to make sure no one else was already on the line. Sometimes the conversation would be so interesting that you couldn't resist taking a extra minute to listen in. It wasn't right but it happened. PhoneI also remember arguing over who was going to change the channel on the black and white tv or stop the picture from rolling or adjusting the horizontal control to keep it from having horizontal lines through the picture. I remember my dad going outside and spinning the antenna to get the best reception,we would yell stop you got it! I remember when we got our first color tv and couldn't wait until Bonanza came on so we could see it in color. The color was blue at the top of the screen, red in the middle and green at the bottom and you could only tone those colors up or down to make them look more realistic. I remember when it was just a rumor that you would some day have to pay to watch tv. We used to wonder how that could be accomplished Antennaand convinced that would ever happen, there was no way to make people pay.

Now we do pay to watch tv, we are never without a phone no matter where we are, we don't have or adjust the tv or get up to change the channels we watch in true to life high definition color. We email instead of telegraph. We have computers that bring the world up close and personal. We can end an email at the speed of light, shop for anything we want or need with out leaving our chair. We can pay our bills online, date online, play online, travel online, watch movies and tv online, listen to radio online, and last but not least we can work online. Realtors take advantage of the new technology everyday, We can procure a listing send the contract as an attachment to an email, bring it to close and never meet each other face to face. I've sold property with only digital pictures of the property and their trust in my knowledge of what they were looking for to guide them.

I can be anywhereOn vacation and conduct business as well or better than I could sitting behind a desk in an office.

I could never have imagined how life could change so much but it has and I'm happy I was around to know what was and what is now. What changes will my children and grand children see in their lifetimes? Someday they will say I remember when...and what will their world be like.

Thank you for the nostalgia.  I remember those days when neighbors would listen in on the conversations.  I am grateful to have known those times and these now.

I remember the party lines, too, Sally. We had one of the first TV sets in our town, and my grandmother used to come over to watch Bishop Fulton J. Sheen. He was so fascinating to me in this robe and cape, and "beanie." He had those piercing eyes and used the chalkboard to illustrate his point. Can you imagine anyone on TV using a chalkboard? Sometimes I wish things hadn't changed so much.

Sally,  What a great piece of nostalgia.  I didn't have party lines growing up, only in college.  I do remember the black and white TV and only having 4 channels.

Some friends and I were just discussing that the other day. Who would have thought we would all have our own phones and could take them anywhere! Crazy how things change in a blink of an eye. Happy weekend.

Best regards.
