My son went off to college in the fall, and I happily emptied my nest! I felt proud to have launched my fledgling! What this left me with was a too-big nest! It turns out I am riding the wave of a national trend - living smaller.
Although the average home today is twice the size it was in 1960, home sizes peaked in 2008, and are now decreasing. It took a 30-yard dumpster, and many "donations" to downsize my life, but I am resolved now to travel lighter through the world!
The trend toward smaller houses pushes homeowners like me to rethink what they have, and how they use things. Many of my things are still in boxes. After living without them for a month or so, I wonder if I even need them? There's a mantra I'm trying to adopt: "if I haven't used it and haven't looked for it, then I'll donate it!"
It takes thought and planning to live smaller, but my new space feels more relaxed and comfortable - easier to manage. I'm enjoying so much more freedom! If you are thinking of downsizing and need help prioritizing, give me a call. I'll work with you to help you understand where you can start in the pursuit of living smaller!
