Long before I thought the Dorchester Lower Mills area had anything special to talk about, I knew about Ice Cream Smith on Dorchester Avene. Friends and acquaintances would "rave" about the homemade ice cream and the simple, unpretentious settinf in Dorchester where it was distributed. For some reason, I am a devotee of lemon ice cream, have been one since i could get 3 scoops for ten cents at Baker's Five and Dime in Flemington, New Jersey. Ice Cream Smith frequesntly has lemon ince cream and many other flavors you cannot get at Cold Spring or the big chains.
Couple the selection and quality with friendly service and reasonable prices, and Ice Cream Smith in Dorchester Lower Mills is a place I visit over and over, although the passing years have dictated that "sugar free" is the new ice cream of choice. The best part about the oiwners of Ice Cream Smith is that they enjoy life. No ice creamis available from Halloween until March 1. The owners had "flown south" to refresh themselves for the next season!!!!
