Back to basic: How doe it affect the market? In today's economy we're seeing more and more homeowners doing DIY project. How does this trend translate to the real estate market? DIY project can potential save homeowners hundred of dollars and increase the value of the home. However, although I give kudos to anyone attempting to improve their home, it can be a disaster! How many times have you walked into a house and though "Who botch up this job?" only to find out that the homeowner did it themselves?

In todays economy people are trying to save money by going back to the basic, and doing the work themselves. But I say, don't take on more then you can handle or the outcome can actually cost you money. When consider doing the job yourself. Use these simple guidelines to ensure that you can handle the job and that it is being done right.

  • Use resource like Home Depot and Lowes to get ideas of what the project is going to cost and how difficult it's going to be.
  • If you don't have the right equipment, consider renting it rather then buying it. That can save you a great deal of money, of course you should consider buying it, if you intend to do many more projects.
  • Ask your friends or family members, who have experience, to help you out. You can offer to pay them or you can barter out your service, if you have something to offer them.
  • Find your local trade school and see if they have an apprentice program. Sometimes these apprentice are looking to gain experience or hone in their skills. They might be willing to work for very little pay. You will get a knowledgeable student and a helping hand.
  • Research your DIY project on the internet. You have a vast tool at your disposal, you it.

If, after doing your home work you find out that this might be a bigger job then you thought, consider hiring an expert. This way you know it will be done right and it will probably cost you less in then long run, especially if you started the project, botch it up, and now have to hire someone to fix it. I think going back to the basic, is a wonderful trend and one that can offer the homeowners great value on their home.
