Masonry Chimney Preventative Maintenance

By
Home Inspector with Ryan and Son Chimneys Contractors LLC

There is no secret that chimneys are often forgotten and left to fend for themselves for long periods of time.  Here are a few tips to help extend the life of your masonry chimney:

  • Annual Inspections/sweeping if necessary.  Your first inspection should be a level II and after that baseline inspection is performed, Level I inspections annually.
  • Apply a chimney specific water proofer
  • Make sure the chimney is capped properly
  • Keep flashing seals tight with sealant where applicable.
  • Keep expansion joints sealed.

Homeowners who follow these simple tips typically prevent major chimney issues and large expensive repairs.
