If you are one of those real estate professionals who does not believe the potential of using video (i.e. full-motion video tours, video introductions, etc.) in your marketing endeavors, hopefully this will shed some new light on the topic.

According to a new study contucted by Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, a significant amount of Americans are not only watching and downloading video on the web, but sharing it as well.  The study indicated that 69% of adult Internet users, which supposedly consists of 52% of all adults in the U.S., are now watching video online.  The percentage of videos being watched vary by genre, which can be depicted in the graph below.

Videos watched by genre

While the graph above does not specifically state the percentage of people who are sharing these videos with others, we can safely conclude the amount of sharing more than likely correlates with the amount of videos being watched.  Not only that, but the fact that social media and video sharing sites are making it easier to share videos with others also contributes to the increasing distribution of video content among others.

Now, here’s another fact that real estate professionals will be pleasantly surprised to read.  Among all types of videos, home video is the most popular content posted on the web, which is shared by a staggering 62% of people who upload video.  So, if you are one of those people who don’t think you’ll see any results from filming your own full-motion video tours or greetings, just know that 62% of video uploaders are doing the same thing.  Remember, it’s not always about the presentation of your video, but the content you provide in it.

Fortunately, the people over a Pew’s Research Center provided another infographic that provides additional information on the types of Americans watching online video.  Something may of you may be interested in is the income levels of the people viewing the videos:

As video and social media sites continue to make video sharing easier and more visible to viewers, it’s probably safe to say that people are more than likely willing to share videos they watch with their family and friends.  Knowing this kind of information, real estate professionals can really leverage the power of video in their own marketing efforts by placing them on sites that give people the option to easily share them with others.  It’s a great way to get additional publicity and distribution of your content, and best of all it won’t cost you any money.  So why not take advantage of it today?

Josh, I recently started using visual tours on my commercial listings. I must be in the top 1% for commercial agents using vt, by and large it is unheard of in the commerial world.    Through your blog, I reviewed Pew and came across the Kodak Playsport. I'm looking for an inexpensive camera for video with a decent audio recorder.  Thoughts?

Joe: A video camera I would recommend for you would be the Flip Video camera.  Not only are they very inexpensive, but they are extremely easy to use.  Check them out at http://www.theflip.com/.  They even allow you to record in HD as well, so you'll really be ahead of your competition!
