Vacationers, Don't Leave Your Common Sense at Home!

Vacation at Carolina BeachesI worked outside on Sunset Beach Island early this afternoon...decided it was too hot so I am working in our island office this afternoon.  As I am doing some computer work, our maintenance men have been in and out all afternoon taking care of complaints from vacationers who arrived on Saturday.  This time of year rentals are from week to week so you won't hear too much out of the renters on Saturday or Sunday but come Monday, according to repairmen, they are in full vacation mode.  Here are some suggestions to make your vacation a pleasant one and not a stressed one:

  • I know you rented Oceanfront for the view but keep the blinds closed in the morning to block that sun or the sun by 10:00, no matter how low you set the thermostat, will wilt you like a flower and you will suffer. Open them in the afternoon when the sun is on the front of the house.
  • Cook breakfast early, sandwiches or microwaveable for lunch and dinner late...the key is HEAT on the inside of the house...that's why Southerners cook on the grill all during the day in the summer.
  • Do run the dishwasher, washer or dryer in the late evening...the HEAT
  • Do keep the sliding doors closed during the day...you can't cook and leave the doors open, even if, you set the thermostat on 50.  By the way, no matter how low you set it...72 degrees is it. If you burn out the air condenser, you are stuck with that rental (no discounts) until it can be fixed.
  • Most of the time, the first activity after unloading is to go grocery shopping.  Refrigerators are asked to do a lot.  One complaint received today was easily resolved according to one repairman.  Guests had not only loaded the refrigerator full of food but had squeezed in a case of 64 oz. water bottles.  They set thermostat at lowest setting and couldn't understand why their items were not cold in a few hours.
  • Everyone lays on the beach or lounges at the pool during the day then they all decide to shower at the same time...maintenance gets a call that hot water is not working.  When he comes back, the dishwasher was running, the wash machine was doing beach towels, and everyone was trying to take a shower.
  • One complaint today said the hot water was not working on the outdoor shower...hello, owners rarely hook hot water to an outdoor shower.
  • Keep the ceiling fans running all the time; use sunscreen (even on cloudy days); keep babies out of the sun altogether...our sun is too strong for them during the main part of the day (even with sunscreen)
  • Runs your car through the car wash when you leave to get the salt off as soon as possible.  It is corrosive!

Keep in mind this is the South...we have extreme heat and unbelievable humidity.  We want you to have a good time so you will return but use the same common sense that you would use at home.  We appreciate your business!

Some of those are just flat-out funny, like the ones about hot water not working.
