Katy, Texas is Pretty Great...

Beatiful Katy

What can I say about it?  It's in wonderful proximity to Houston - in some areas sharing a dividing line and in other areas sharing the I-10, the Westpark Tollway or Westheimer.  Whatever way you look at the connection, it is a beautiful marriage of convenience.  Houston offering everything big, flashy and required in an urban city and Katy offering a wonderful respite from the daily grind of an urban city.

Katy is what I refer to as my own, personal Universal back lot.  You know the one I'm talking about.  The one with the perfect neighborhoods and wonderfully manicured lawns, the one where the kid has on a baseball cap and rides his bike around the neighborhood with his dog and 8 other kids in the neighborhood.  Until I saw it, I didn't believe how neat and clean a neighborhood could be.  I never thought I'd sit at my own kitchen table with a soda and watch my son out of the front window playing football with the entire neighborhood in the front yard (especially since coming from Los Angeles where everything was always scheduled as a play date, so it wasn't too often that you had that many children in one place, let alone your front yard).  I love it when my neighbors laugh at the absurd number of bikes tossed on our front yard at any given time and I smile through my tears at our grocery bill (it's shocking how much food a whole army of kids can eat on a daily basis - I liken them to locusts).  How many times has someone knocked on our front door to return with our forlorn looking bull mastiff "Taffy" sitting at their feet, while they kindly explain that Ms. Taffy had once again escaped through a gate left open by one of the kids or one of the gardeners?  I'm sure the sight of our 100 pound Bull Mastiff "puppy" would have scared off many a hardened criminal in Los Angeles, but not in our Katy neighborhood.  In our neighborhood, everyone knows Taffy and they just lure her back home with a kind word and a firm hand on the collar.

One of my favorite moments since we've been here was meeting with a neighbor to discuss listing their home (I got the listing) and when they realized which house in the neighborhood was mine, the wife told me that she and her husband walked past my house every night and had always admired a wine rack we had in our kitchen (oh yes, the same one my husband brought into our marriage from his bachelor days and to which I often threaten to give to Goodwill when he's away on a business trip, the very same one that I have punctured my leg on 50 times, and the exact same one that is actually leaving a rust stain on my tile).  She went on to tell me that she would jokingly tell her husband that she should just walk up to the door to ask to see this beautiful wine rack and introduce herself - but, of course, she never would or could because she thought we might close the door in her face and think that she was crazy (although you probably are crazy if you think that wine rack really is attractive).  I mention all of this, because I met them as they put their house on the market and as they are leaving the state.  Imagine how flattered my husband would have been had she ever really knocked on that door.  Imagine how nice it would have been for us to meet them when we first arrived in the neighborhood and not as they were leaving. It just serves as a reminder of how nice people are in this area and how eager they are to meet one another and reach out to one another, but sometimes people are just plain shy.  She's a wonderful woman and I think next time I speak to her, I'll let her know that she has inspired me to introduce myself to the new neighbors as the move in and bring them something to welcome them to the neighborhood (like a small cake or maybe one of the kids - smile).  Wish me luck!
