Yikes!
I am by far not a bear expert. But i heard the heat this year is making them head farther south.
Makes no sense to me. Hopefully someone can explain?

When I was younger and read that if you're attacked by a bear you should play dead I kept wondering if I would have the courage....they're beautiful creatures but I'll keep my distance, thanks very much.  Can you tell I'm a chicken?

How far away is your friend from the bear when he took the photo?

Was that a baby bear? I think they're cute but my husband keeps making me watch those Animal Planet and National Geographic shows to show me how all bears can get mean....especially polar bears. Still....they're cute.

In NH, a young boy was recently killed by a black bear. The population is much higher right now, I don't know why. Serious stuff when they wander too close to humans!

Sarah...those are some AWESOME pictures!  Thanks for sharing them!  Living where these creatures roam free and can be seen daily must be quite an experience!

Those are great pics Sarah. I hope your friend was using a really good zoom and wasn't as close as it appears. ;-)

These would be great pictures to share in the Photography Group as well.

Ciao!

Pete - I've heard that, too.  We're having a drought, might be harder for them to find food.

Maggie - Play dead?!  I don't think I could either!  Eeek!

Aziz - I'm not sure, but not too far.  It took them a while to get the camera out.  It was a Mom and baby, but I don't know which that is in the picture.  Doesn't look too big, but it's hard to tell.

Jon - They are hunters, I am not.  My friend's husband, who actually had the camera, is a pretty big guy.  I got my car stuck in a ditch one time and he helped me get out -- by LIFTING the car up while I was in it.  No lie.

Sally - That may be the baby, I don't know.  I would keep my distance, but I'm glad they were brave enough to take the pictures!

Sue - They're probably having to travel more to find food, if you're having a drought like we are.

Irina - Thanks, I thought so, too!

Mary - Well, they don't roam free around here much -- these pics were taken in a different part of the state.

Jennifer - I just joined and added them!  Thanks!  :o)

Sarah, while I love wildlife on TV, being on the east end of Long Island is a relief.  No bears or (like Denver) cougars- just deer, fox, and an occasional enormous spider typically grace my day.  Really, coming face to face with a bear would be...unthinkable!  Your friend is very brave!

Laurie - She is brave and insane in equal measure -- and I love her to death for it!

Tom - LOL!!  Good thing they didn't get THAT picture.

Sarah... there were rumors of Black Bears on Turner Road in Grafton this summer. I thought I saw it  the morning I went to get sunset pictures, sitting by Wickwire creek. By the time I pulled around to get a better look "it" was in the water, swimming. It could have been a Beaver. Both would be very rare to see in Grafton. She's very lucky to have caught those pictures. I'm SO jealous!

Sarah How cool is that. I love seeing animals in their habitats. Where I live in a small town just outside the Boise city limits we have a 100+ acres of corn growing behind us. It is a sactuary for Phesants, Quail and other birds. I see them al the time running around my backyard with their young.

That is awesome! I love bears, at least at a distance! I have only seen real ones at the zoo and that is alright with me. Great shots!!!

Jeff - She said they fumbled with finding the camera, thought they would totally miss that -- I'm so glad they got it!  I told her that's the closest I want to be to a black bear, having my best friend get a picture.  ;o)

Donna - I see deer, turkey, raccoons and ground hogs A LOT.  In fact, I'm getting tired of near misses with deer while I'm driving.  <Knock on wood>

Lysa - You brave girl, you!  I am not that much of an adventurer!

Barbara-Jo - I'm with you, seeing them at the zoo is fine!

Bear Yipes it looked like they were real close to this bear. That could of been pretty scarey. Thanks for sharing.
