The Trinity River Bridge

The Trinity River Bridge

This through truss bridge over the Trinity River was built in the 1940's. When I first moved to Riverside in 1995 this was our only way over the Trinity River.  We were always hearing about accidents on the bridge because it was two way traffic and the lanes were very narrow. If you have ever heard of the book 90 Minutes in Heaven, this is where the accident took place. (That is a whole different blog--great book!)

A new 4 lane bridge was constructed to the east of the old bridge. It was dedicated on September 29, 2003. It is called the Veteran's Memorial Bridge.

Later that same year, the old bridge was refurbished and opened up to the public. It is available only for south bound traffic.

When I shot the photo left, I was standing at the south end of the bridge, The resulting photo gives the appearance that the bridge is located in Riverside (Walker County), when in fact it is located in Trinity County.

The bridge is registered in the National Register of Historical Places and one of the main public boat ramps for Lake Livingston is located east of this bridge.

If you are interested in finding a great place to ski on Lake Livingston, the secret spot is to the west of this very bridge. You have to be patient. Keep going until you see the cliffs and the water is like glass. You will be glad that you did. Most people stop too short and don't even know about this place.  You'll have the whole area to yourself. Unless of course, I'm there! ☺

Hi Joni, the white paint makes the bridge look so clean and inviting!  Now I trying to remember is it the Trinity River that goes through Austin or is it the Colorado?
