3rd Annual Picket Fence Tour for 2011

History of the Oxford Picket Fence

Early photographs of the town show that the unique Oxford picket fence graced lawns in Oxford around the mid-1800s. We don’t know who installed the first picket fence or who imagined its distinctive and exotic design – the onion dome with center hole. That architectural shape had been popular in Russia, India, and the Middle East for centuries. So, it’s not farfetched to ponder that an early sea captain brought the first fence to town!

All of the Oxford picket fences are painted by local artists throughout the community. They will be on display throughout the Town of Oxford until mid-September. The fences will be auctioned off on Saturday, October 8, 2011. The event will take place at Combsberry Inn, Evergreen Rd. from 4 to 6 p.m. If you are interested in purchasing a fence but cannot attend the event, please visit our website (www.portofoxford.com) to find out how. Half of the profits from this event will be donated to the favorite charity of the artist whose fence raises the most money at the Auction!
