School has begun, Wurst Bowl has come and gone, temperatures have dipped into the 90s...my marriage has been interrupted for football season. While the leaves are nowhere near turning beautiful fall colors, I sense a change in the air! Autumn is my favorite time of year and especially in New Braunfels Texas. Labor Day weekend marks the last big hurrah before the tourists leave summer behind and the locals regain the town...well, almost. While most people come to New Braunfels during the Summer for Schlitterbahn or to float our rivers, here are some Fall things to do in this little piece of Germany smack dab in the Texas Hill Country!
Comal County Fair and Rodeo: Held September 22-26 at the Comal County Fair Grounds with a Parade September 24 down San Antonio St. There is no school September 24, because it is kind of a big deal around these parts! Lots to see here from a PRCA rodeo, carnival, nightly dances, BBQ cook-off, arts and crafts, funnel cakes, livestock and all associated smells. Nothing says fun like bustin' a mutton!
Gruene Music and Wine Festival: It's not pronounced "groo-ene," but "green," just like the color. This festival is in its 24th year and always a hit. Plan to be here October 7-October 10 to help celebrate Texas and Americana music, as well as Texas Wine Month. There will be performances by Jack Ingram, Tanya Tucker, Gospel Brunch with a Texas Twist on Sunday (catered by The Gristmill) and more wine tasting than an episode of The Real Housewives. You can feel good about getting your Pinot Grigio on because proceeds benefit the United Way of Comal County. Tickets go on sale September 7.
It's a "Ten Day Salute to Sausage!" That's right, if you're into all things lager and liederhosen, you should not miss this. It's the largest festival of its kind outside of Germany and this side of the Pecos. This year, bring Oma and Opa and get your chicken dance on October 29-November 7, weekdays from 5 pm and weekends from 11 am until, oh... whenever they run out of beer.
Note to self: Wow, we drink a lot here...
Tour de Gruene: October 30-31,plan to be in Gruene for this annual bicycle race which is part of Wurstfest activities. If you'd like to race, registration will be soon, but you should know that Lance Armstrong has been known to show up. Live Strong, people. I'll just be watching...
Of course, if you ever just want to plan a day trip, you can visit our Saturday farmer's market, one of our fine restaurants, Dry Comal Creek winery, Landa Park, or catch a live show at Gruene Hall, River Road Icehouse, or Whitewater Amphitheatre.
Can't wait to see you!
Disclaimer: Laurie Jarrett is just a real estate agent in New BraunfelsTX and is not directly affiliated with any of the events listed above...but she does do a mean chicken dance!
