Time for the Uncommon at the Common Ground Fair! Unstoppable Woman! - Day 28

Yes, it’s that time again…the Common Ground Fair in Unity, Maine starts today, Sept, 24 and goes through Sunday, Sept. 26. This fair is one of the biggest in the Northeast and is all about Maine’s rural and agricultural traditions. Last year there were about 51,000 people attending and almost 700 vendors and demonstrators. This year there are AT LEAST as many vendors and demonstrators and they cover a range of topics: Agricultural Education, Crafts, Energy, Environmental Concerns, Health and Healing, Livestock, Cooking Demonstrations, Musicians, Storytellers, Social and Political Action Speakers, Forestry Speakers, Native American Art Demonstrators, Farmer’s Market…..phew!!! You name it, it’s probably covered!!!

This year to help fair goers, the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) has placed a full, color-coded fair schedule online. There is a list of fair participants, sorted by type. You can also find a map of the fairgrounds to make it easier to find certain demonstrations and vendors. On each of the three days there will be a Featured Speaker, covering the topics of food self-sufficiency, investing in small local businesses, and Maine’s organic community.

This year is the 34th annual Common Ground Fair.  It has grown in size considerably in the past 34 years. It originally was held at the Litchfield Fairgrounds, but quickly outgrew that space. In 1981 it moved to the Windsor Fairgrounds and was there until 1998, when it moved to its current location at the Unity Fairgrounds.

The fair is held Sept, 24, 25, and 26 from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Friday and Saturday and from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Sunday. Tickets are $10.00 for adults, $8.00 for seniors over 65, and free for under 12 years old. Tickets can be purchased in advance at various vendors around the area.

So if you are interested in doing something UNCOMMON this weekend, head to Unity and check out this celebration of Maine’s rural life. You will have a truly wonderful uncommon experience!

Lisa, it sounds like an interesting way to spend the day.  I used to live in Maine as a child and it was beautiful.  I wish they had an event such as this in my area.  Thanks for sharing this information.

Samantha - Maine still is beautiful.  You should come back for a visit!  You'd better be careful, though...if you visit too much you might want to move back...like I did!  :D

Donna - Congrats!  You made it!  Saturday can't get here fast enough!

Carra - I know - I couldn't believe the numbers when I read them!  I'd love to go but I know there is NO WAY IN HECK that my husband would agree to spending any time in crowds that large!
