Alaska-Land of Extremes

I recently wrote about my town which is in Kenai Alaska on my blog, please feel free to visit.I thought I would write something about Alaska in General.

Alaska has the biggest this and the biggest that meaning......we have the world record 97 pound 4 ounce king salmon, the biggest halibut halibut at 459 pounds and the tallest mountain...lots of them 39 mountain ranges with Mt Mckinley being the highest and Mount St. Elias at 18,008 feet being the nations's second largest.

Alaska is one-sixth the size of the Lower 48 and has more coastline than the rest of the states combined, with 30,000 plus miles. We have 100,000 glaciers in Alaska. The Malaspina Glacier is larger than Rhode Island and the Nebesna Glacier is 80 miles long. Both are in St. Elias National Park.

We have 80 volcanos, 44 of which are active and the strongest earthquake on record in North America (9.2) (Glad I did not live here then)There are 17 national park systems, 54 million acres which comprises 13 percent of the state's landmass. We even have our own dialect in the Last Frontier...."Breakup" marks the end of winter and beginning of Spring. "Bush" means anywhere in Alaska that's off of the the road system. "Cheechako" describes a new comer. "Interior" means area around Fairbanks. "Sourdough" means newcomer and "Termination dust" is the first light snow on the mountains, it means summer is ending.

I know one thing we don't have and that is the hot heat in the lower 48. It was 67 today and tourist love it.

Sincerely,
