The HOSTS(Help One Student To Succeed), recognized by the United States Department of Education as a national model for successful mentoring programs, is a nationwide language arts improvement program which combines one-on-one instruction utilizing volunteers with specific lessons tailored specifically for each student. This is a fantastic reading program and I am currently beginning my 7th year aa a volunteer with HOSTS in the Bryan Independent School District.
A year ago I was ready to call it quits, but something inside kept nagging at me. " You can't quit...what on earth is wrong with you." "These kids need you."
I had just completed a merger with my firm and another company and knew it was going to require a whole lot of my time for a year ..... so I told the teacher I was finished volunteering .
Then the fall semesrter rolled around and something just didn't seem right. For 6 years straight, every Monday morning at 8:15 sharp I was in that second grade classroom at a local elementary school sitting at one of those tiny desks waiting on the kids to march in.
So I am happy to report I am back at it again this year, crammed into that munchkin sized desk and have the privilege of getting a really great student to work with. Maybe I will make a difference in his life. I hope I can . If you cannot read you cannot succeed!
If your school district has a HOSTS or similar reading program I highly recommend thatif you are looking to make a difference , to volunteer . You will love the results!
