Solar Water Heating systems are an alternative to the standard water heater that is found in most every home. There are a number of different types of systems available now days for conversion or new built home.  You can find a lot of information on different systems by doing a google search with the terms solar hot water systems.

The Energy Star website suggests their Energy Star approved system that will cut your water heating bill in half and reduce your carbon footprint.   there  are choices for hot, moderate, and cold climates as well as choices on size and cost of systems.

Here in Austin and surrounding counties there are some homes for sale that are advertising solar water heat. some of these properties are new builds in new eco friendly developments such as Las Casas Verdes in South Austin, and other are older homes with solar water heat conversions.

I have a few people in my neighborhood going solar. It is becoming more reasonable for residential homes.

Harry you are right it is getting more reasonable!  Back in the day when we built our first eco friendly home ( 15 years ago!!!) it was awefully expensive but well worth the investment even back then!

Really, everyone should have a solar hot water if you live in an area with plenty of sunshine.  They have made it mandatory in Hawaii for all new single family homes.
