When a Deal Isn't Such a Deal

Finding the right home to purchase is about much more than finding the "best" deal. I cringe when a client comes to me and instead of having a list of things they would like in a new home (large yard, formal dining room, attends good schools, etc) their top priority is a "good deal".

Of course I want to help my clients negotiate to the best deal - but long after the euphoria of getting a great deal has worn off - they have to LIVE in the house.

When we sit down to have an initial discussion about finding a home I stress the importance of enjoying the home after the purchase. We don't want to go look at homes that are an hour commute from work just because they are a great deal - if a long commute will make you unhappy. I educate my clients about finding the best mix of both objectives. A great house - for a great price!

Along those same lines we don't discuss how much they were pre-approved for, but rather at what price point they are comfortable with the payments. I want my clients to still feel good about their purchase long after they have finished unpacking the moving boxes!

If you are buying a home, a deal is never a good thing for you and your family. If you are buying an investment property, great, get that deal and make it into a profit. Buy buying a home and getting a deal are two very different things!
